Stripped thread 500
« on: November 14, 2021, 01:19:06 AM »
Hi All,
The thread that bolt 22 goes into is stripped slightly, presumably by a PO trying to stop an oil leak. If I use a longer bolt, I can get good purchase and it tightens up ok. But, is it possible to block the oil feed to the cam by using a longer bolt? IE, does that thread go right down to oil gallery or would the bolt bottom out before it blocked anything? I'd prefer not to pull the head to check.
Thanks,
Kevin

There was a thread that covered this exact question a month ago and it think it was a top cover off repair. Someone will come along with a link or answer shortly.

Never measured it but yes i think a longer bolt might block the oilway. I know a common oil leak is not having the soft alloy washer between the steel bracket and alloy cam cover

Spraying fluid up the feed to the a head (with it on it's side), it does not come out the tapped hole. The oil gallery plug and the feed holes to the cam surfaces is at about 5.5mm offset from the 6mm tapped hole. The plug is about 7.3mm dia. so presume gallery is a bit smaller than this. I believe you will be ok, but try it without the bracket first to make sure it goes down easily to the depth you need.
I get 11.5 turns in the threads by screwing in by hand on this example.

Thanks for the input Guys, all sorted. A 50mm bolt just bottoms out before the head is seated, so an extra copper washer and we are good to go. Snugs up nicely with new washers. Appreciate the advice. Once running, I will check to make sure there is plenty of oil at the camshaft.
