9 second turbo 750: A visit with an old friend
« on: November 01, 2021, 10:39:35 PM »
I noticed the rejoining of a member who is a turbo enthusiast. Made me think of my old friend Doug. This is a repost that I made on another motorcycle forum after I made this recent trip:

I have an older acquaintance who lives in Southern Arizona near Fort Huachuca (near Elgin actually). But, they are in the middle of nowhere, and it takes a strong determination to get there. Nice winding roads, but the last mile is treacherous dirt and gravel. He has been a motorcyclist his entire life, held numerous records in drag bike racing, and was part of a very successful Baja racing team. Fascinating guy. Spent an afternoon there recently. Even at age 81, his shop is full of projects and possibilities. He campaigned a pretty bad ass single overhead cam 750 that was turbo charged. Look at the size of the turbo on the damn thing! Yes, he still has it. (See photo) No, it’s not for sale. I asked.

That's the real deal with the paper to prove it. I'm going to look at one this week that ran 10.70's. The owner said 10 lbs of boost is max without some really good rods.

I now live 30 minutes from Atco; but in '83 I had run my current K1 at the other track here in Jersey.
And unfortunately, Englishtown Raceway Park no longer has drag racing.

It appears that the exhaust goes over the top, feeds the turbo and exits down in front. I was trying to imagine an intercooler on one, not an easy packaging problem. Maybe some alcohol would help cool things off a bit. E85 or water / methanol injection?

I love that bike, what's the frame, looks like a Rickman or a Seeley? Yep that turbo is a monster, I'd love to know how big the carb was that was feeding it. I need a turbo CB750.... ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I think building one from existing components may be the route to go, the Rajay 377 B25 is obsolete with no parts that I can find. I think mine has a 38mm bendix zenith.  The newer ones have the turbo in front, intercooler and blow through throttle body efi.
  Much respect to that guy.

I bought a turbo kit from Ricky Racer for my BMW K100RS a year or two ago, sadly he didn't realise that it was missing a couple of major components so unless I can find, or manufacture, an intake plenum for a Luftmeister turbo kit for a bike that I may never ride again anyway, I'd like to use the turbo and a few other bits for a CB750 turbo kit.

I'll have to pull the box out and see what sort of turbo came with it. I also have a good Subaru turbo here, it came off my twin turbo Liberty GT, (Legacy in the US) it's the smaller "Primary" turbo used to get the car accelerating before the bigger "Secondary" turbo cuts in, so might be suitable for a CB750, or might be a bit too big. I'll have to do some measuring.

I think a big flat slide smooth bore Mikuni HSR for a Harley would be a good carb for a turbo setup, I have one on my XLH1200 and it was super easy to set up. ;D

The kit I got came with a sportster ironhead carb from what I've been told. There's a guy with a turbo mustang that must have a huge turbo, it drives around on the open wastegate, going ssshhshshshsh shshshshshshshshshhsh.

Maybe we should begin a turbo thread.

I think there was a turbo thread many years ago Don, but rather than flog a dead horse, why not start a new one, I want to see pics of your turbo setup anyway. ;D

Now you guys are really starting to bum me out. Due to a recent health turn, I have begun to divest myself of a few projects. I had an 82 CX500 turbo that didn’t need much other than time and money. I let it go.   Coulda, shoulda, woulda…

Ha ha, it's an interesting psychological effect Darrell, say "CX500" and I think, "Boring......", but add the word "Turbo", and I'm suddenly interested! ;D

I love that bike, what's the frame, looks like a Rickman or a Seeley?
It's not a Seeley frame, at least not a 750 Seeley, judging from what appears to be a single backbone tube? It does look like a Reynolds 531 decal on the one frame tube.

I gave old Doug a call this evening and talked about that motorcycle. He was rattling off names, places, racing teams and I was furiously trying to jot down notes. The one thing I did get was that the frame was made by a gentleman called Harry Hindall.  I had to experiment with the spelling, and didn't find much on the internet, but did find a link to a frame that looks very much like this one on the britbike.com forum.  Here is that link:

https://www.britbike.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/750956/anyone-heard-of-harry-hindall-frame-maker

Doug says Harry is no longer with us, but he couldn't say enough about the guy - his skills and his humanity.

As for the carburetor, he said he tried a lot of them on that motorcycle, couldn't remember exactly what he had on there now, said he'd go out and take a look tomorrow and let me know.  He did mention having worked with a fellow named Geraldo that had been at some point nicknamed Mr Ducati.  Said the guy was a genius with carburetor setup and induction in general.  (Turbo is a Rajay.)

I actually spent more time on the phone with his wonderful wife Marie.  Highly intelligent woman very knowledgeable with regard to health and longevity. I find myself in need of some of that knowledge. Was a fortuitous phone call...

The guy your friend was referring to is Eraldo Ferracci, he was very successful with several turbo SOHC bikes he campaigned. Draw through carb systems and also a record setting single draw through injector. Years ago I tracked his number down and called him for advice when I got my turbo running. Fast by Ferracci had really taken off by then, but he took time out for the call and seemed to enjoy discussing his past work. I told him I was taking notes and he made sure I jotted down the things he thought were most important.
“Let me tell you something” in his thick Italian accent I’ll never forget.
