Help me identify this CB 750 model
« on: November 16, 2021, 12:16:05 AM »
I paid almost nothing for this bike, but I can not determine if it is a K or F model.
It is registered first time in 1977, but many parts are replaced.
From what I can see, it may be a Harley 16" rear wheel, and front forks also look very wide with a custom triple tree. I can not say if the rear swing arm is original.

Bike has a clean title and papers, but for some reason the papers only say CB 750, not exact model. The serial no. is very hard to read on the frame, since it has a thick layer of paint, but from the papers it is stated as 27xxxxx.

Engine sounds fine and it runs, but with the pod airfilters, it does not pull perfectly. I think the original airbox would fix this and it seems it would run great.

From the fuel tank & forks I'd say a K7 or K8.

Is the K7 fuel tank actually different from the F2? Is the K fuel tank wider?
In regards to the forks I did recognize that this seems K, but it could of course have been replaced together with the tank.

I think the forks were the same F & K in the late 1970's, but the K Tank was larger and rounder at rear. Similar gas cap. The K model also had that ridge just above the center line, the F did not...as I remember them.

Are you referring to the frame or the wheel? Because I think the wheel is a 16" Harley wheel.

The F model tank is definitely different than the K model tank.
The 1977 F2 had rear disc brake and dual front disc brakes.
The K model in 1977 K7 had wire spoke wheels, rear drum brake and single front disc brake(yours has all of these). Yes someone has changed the triple trees to wider billet aluminum trees(might be harley trees???)
More than likely your bike is a modified K model.

The second picture is a 1977 F2 as it came stock.

It was common in the 70's to use the Honda hub assembly and use a Harley rim with different slokes.  That would allow you to have a wider rear tire.   I have that assemly and tire in my shed.

Carbs look like they came off a mid 70's 750. Not a later '77 or '78 750.

Do you think the rear hub on my picture looks like the original Honda K7?

Definitely a Honda hub /Harley rim assembly.  I can't say what year hub maybe someone else cam identify it.  On the left side of the steering head (opposite side of the tag) the serial number is stammped into the frame.  May take a bit of GENTLE file and sandpaper use to find it.  Are the fatory side cover tabs still there?

Yes I will try to remove the paint layer from the serial no.
In regards to the side cover tabs, I will try to remove the current covers and provide a picture.

What ever it is it has been highly modified. Engine number? 77/78 K rear swingarm. Pre 77 carbs.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Check that front axle. With those wide trees, there is a huge gap between the fork leg and the speedo drive. That suggests the axle is barely clamped?

Does indeed look questionable on the picture below - look like the wheel axle may be "hanging" within the homemade spacer.
Will take a look when I get back home today. I am anyway not driving the bike, since it was my plan to find out whether it was a K, and therefore worth putting some money in to making it more original.

I just managed to find the right angle of light and could see that the VIN is indeed a K frame. So that clears things up for me. Probably i will go at making this bike relatively original and drivable, i have front fork, gauges and other stuff from a K in inventory anyway.
