Participation in the BOTM
« on: March 01, 2007, 08:42:36 AM »

I'd just like to say something about the way I kept trying to get participation in the voting on the BOTM. As far as I'm concerned, I can't think of any bikes here that don't deserve recognition of some kind. I mean, most everyone here has been into their bike in one way or another. My Own Opinion but, I just feel like we ALL are like a sort of family (in that we all are SOHC4 owners) and we should show support for each other. As I said before, maybe the turnout wasn't much different in some of the other votings but, we didn't know because it wasn't posted right in front of us. I don't know, I guess it's not a good thing to be enthusiastic about the BOTM voting. I'll have to say that I was very surprised that there weren't more bikes nominated too because there are so many great bikes here, it's just unreal.
I just felt like that needed to be said, so I did.

bill... i do agree w/ you except for the "I don't know, I guess it's not a good thing to be enthusiastic about the BOTM voting."

get excited!

but, let's just leave the getting other people excited up to them... maybe they just don't wanna  ;)

i think one answer about botm is that some people really visit our fine site for other reasons and just don't care about botm... which, in all honesty, is fine w/ me.  yes, a better turnout would be awesome but, other sites i've been to have a similar turnout in ratio to their membership numbers.  let's just call it a WIN no matter how many people vote.

        Yeah hef,
I know where you're coming from. When I said that "I guess it's not a good thing to be enthusiastic about the BOTM voting", I was being sarcastic. I get very excited about it because I think that we have The Best Site on the Web and one Hell of a Great Bunch of Great Looking Bikes of ALL Styles. To me, the BOTM is kinda like our own little "Hall Of Fame" and, while there are great ones there, there are lots more that deserve to be there, IMHO. I belong to several sites that deal with the other types and brands that I am involved with and none are as active or have as many members as we do and it bothers me that a good number of our members aren't very active (for what ever reason). I know that some folks don't have as much time as others and all, so I hope no one gets the idea that I think everyone should devote most of their time here. This IS a great place with a lot of great folks and bikes but, it would be real easy to become stagnant, you know. I think Glenn and the Moderators do a great job and we should show our support by getting involved. That's all.

I hear ya scunny, there are a lot of very cool bikes here. And BTW, don't cut yourself short there guy. ;) I know the feeling though, that's why I wish that there was a way to break it down some so that it would be easier and I know the subject has already been approached and I'm not trying to bring that back out or anything of the sort. I just am so motorcycle oriented (especially SOHC4s) that I just want recognition for them, you know? Thanks for your reply too.

Here's another thought: Maybe people are forgetting about it. I spend the majority of my time here on the Open Forum and the Tech forum. I generally only look at the BOTM once a month to vote and/or nominate and it's usually just by luck that I check in there. I look at all of the threads periodically, but I'm usually surfing this site between phone calls. In other words, I don't always have the time to browse the entire site. Maybe if a reminder was posted once the voting starts, in the Open and Tech threads, we'd draw more voters.

You know, you might just have something there. Some way of getting our attention, might be just the ticket. Of course that'd probably be up to heffay, since he's doing the BOTM thing. There are probably several reasons for the low attention to the voting. I mean 69 out of nearly 3,000.

I voted for March, Jan and Feb I missed :-\  I find it hard to remember who's bike is whoms.  I like stock for myself or as close as bags and a barn door are, but there are some nice looking cafes and chops that members have.

you guys do have some good points and maybe once every quarter or so we'll have a specialized contest.  but, don't expect that.  it will be voted on whether we want to do something like that or not.  and right now, we've got bike of the month and that's what we got.   so nominate and vote for your favorite.

secondly, i won't make announcements for botm in other forums but, here's my suggestion.  click recent unread topics once a month and you'll be reminded of all the wonderful things that this forum has to offer, including the bike of the month contest and nomination threads.

+1 on that.....I often forget to come in this forum.....maybe someway to sticky a link to it at the top of the SOHC/4 Bike Talk forum.  I know it is not really technical topic but I think that's where most folks spend their time here.

Personally, I think this is about the second or third time that I have come into this forum. I mostly habng out on the tect board and the "other bikes" board. I should check the other boards out more, I just dont.

but speaking of where people hang out, When I logged on this morning, we were only 250 posts away from having 100,000 posts on the SOHC Talk/Tech board. Right now we are only 150 posts away. At this rate, we'll probably crack it some time tonight!!   :o

How about sending a message to all members when nominations or voting is open?  Don't know if there is that capability but I would be much more inclined to vote if I had a reminder.  Maybe even put a reminder at the top of the main page or voting buttons so you can vote from any page, not just the BOTM forum.

I always forget about this because I normally go straight to 'SOHC/4 bikes' forum, check out what's new and call it a night.  It's usually when I'm bored at work and wasting taxpayer's money that I actually look in something other than the 'SOHC/4 bikes' forum.  Today being the case, I haven't been in here in months.  Not because I don't care about it, I just keep forgetting.

And sorry for digging up an old thread but it was only a few posts down on the first page here.

+1 on a sticky reminder for new folks like me and those that are forgetful like me.

And +1 on occasional special classes.  I do like that it's a mix of stock and modified, but I'd like some occasional "best of the worst"(unrestored/unfinished/rat), cafe only, chopper only, best resto, best original, one more and it could be a bi-monthly thing.

Thanks for doing this Heffay.

There are a couple of ways to generate more interest.  One would be a monthly message to all members; another would be to use the news ticker at the top of the page, though I wonder if everyone notices that?

I might add too that I started setting up the Bike of the Month pages on the main website,
