How to apply Threebond
« on: March 01, 2007, 09:11:47 AM »
I used a bit of silicone sealant on the main caps to torque the cases for plastigaging the bearings. I just spread a thin film with my finger and torqued the halfcase over it.

When I disassembled the cases most of it was gone. When you torque the two parts together it squeezes out. So the question is this:

I'll be using Threebond 1104 for the final assembly. The directions on the package (TB1211, I got the wrong one) just indicate to "push sealant ahead for uniform bead". Then some information: Tack free in 30 min, fully cures in 24hr, optimum strength in 3 days.

Do I let it sit till it's tack free and then join the two parts?

Do I join the two parts before it's tack free to get a more uniform thickness?

Do I spread the bead to form a thin layer then wait till it's tack free to join the cases?

How long after you apply it do you have to wait before tightening bolts?

What is the proper way to use it?

I don't mean to get anal about sealant application, I just don't want oil leaks which is where I started and ended up having to rebuild almost the complete engine.

I use a model paint brush that has had the bristles cut in half (to make them stiff). Put it on thinly...as soon as your done painting the surfaces assemble.

Actually, i have the stupid question ::) Is it fine if i use really thin layer of 1104 sealant applied with brush only on one crankcase half? Will it be oiltight? ???

Up
I forgot to explain why i worry about it ::) Honda shop manual asking to apply sealant on one surface, other manuals describing it different way - using sealant on both surfaces... So, i confused. :-\
