Vetter Vindicator II vs Windjammer II
« on: November 25, 2021, 07:38:07 AM »
Have a Windjammer II on my CB750K1. I'm a fan of Vetter but modifying the bike from cruiser to a bit sportier. Vindicator II seems more rounded and a nice look. Wondering if someone has pics of one on their CB750. Or, pics of their modified CB750 scrambler/sport type look with either Vetter attached. Also curious about wind resistance and handling of one versus the other at higher speeds.
I know if I really want a sport look I should get rid of the Vetter but like it too much to ditch it. So, throwing it out is not an option.
Thanks for the help.

Hard to find pics of Vindicators on Hondas, I found these on the Vetter Owners Group site.

The windjammers have integrated turn sigs on mine.  The Vindicators are the same shape without the turn sigs integrated,  I believe I have one in storage.  It's like they cut out a space in the vindicator mold for the turn sigs, and then called it a Windjammer.

Vindicator and Vindicator 2 are the same, between them there was a fire at the factory and the molds for Vindicator specific lowers were destroyed, 2's have a different prefix on their serial numbers.

I saw a black vindicator at Sturgis a couple years ago, it had a black cut down windshield. I think the owner was trying to simulate a Harley look.

I did cut the windshield down on my Windjammer II. Looks better and still provides good wind protection.

I like the windshield cut so you can just see over the top of of it.  You have an unobstructed view of the road obstacles, other driver threats, and the wind is off your chest and over/around you.  Actually, you feel some wind pressure at your back pushing on you a bit forward.  I’m thinking that’s one reason why the fuel mileage and speed capability aren’t much affected.  It also Cools you in summer.  But, only while moving, of course.  It is initially weird not having the front of the bike not turn with the bars, though.

+1 on the slightly shorter windshield!
Craig used to sell them in 3 heights until the bankers stole his company from him (during the Windjammer IV series), then there was only 2 heights and a business card to aftermarket windshiled vendors for other heights. I started with the nominal height and switched to the 1" lower one to see just over the top of it. This works best in the rain, as it kicks the water up and over your head while you look thru the non-wetted non-windshield slot. Very helpful in the wet.

The Vindicator came about because the SS with the giant integrated turn signals used up most of the interior room of the fairing: you could not even store your jacket in it with those big lamps aboard. IIRC someone made replacement ABS panels for a while that allowed you to remove the lamps and mount your OEM turn signals instead - it wasn't Vetter - as I saw a few of those 're'converted ones at Sturgis that year. My brother bought his second SOHC4 (CB650K1) with the Vetter complete package (SS fairing) and hated the lamps after he had ridden 50k miles with the Jammer I on his first CB500. But, as he was single then, he just made a big backrest with cupholder on it, instead. :)

Craig designed the Windjammer using the wind tunnel (and a friendly professor there) at the University of Illinois/Champagne-Urbana campus after his Phantom full-size fairing wasn't exactly what he wanted for the 750, despite it selling pretty well (and cooling the center 2 cylinders more than the 1-4 ones, which greatly improved 750 engine life). It wasn't aerodynamic enough for him: when he made the 'Jammer he also wanted to have removable Lowers so the upper half would fit more bikes with less hardware. The MPG on my K2 was much better than my fairing-less K1 until I removed the Vetter one brief (2-week) period in 1972 to test it myself: then the MPG dropped by 4 in mixed town/hiway riding. That was when I got the -1" windshield, too, when I put it back on. I've not ridden without it since then, it just makes that much sense (to me).

I can stuff my rainsuit in the right side of my SS and it's full. That's why you need Vetter saddle bags. L0L!  Anyone that needs a jammer, come by and I'll send a couple home with you.  I have 2 or 3 black early ones.

Do you have the mounts, too? I have an extra one for the CB750K frames. Not sure how well it will fit the F frames, but not many F riders today like this fairing.

I have F and K mounts, The difference is, on the F it seems like something is split for the wiring harness and the left side top frame tab is shorter to miss the wiring box. There should be a gl1000 bracket, and somewhere my brother has one for a cb500 and once there was a KZ1000 mount. If we could find it.

Which Vetter fairing was the same type/mount,etc. but more rounded-shaped than the traditional Windjammer? He had some large type which looked more rounded and aero:possibly the Pichler influenced him??

We had a K4 back in the late 70's with a rack and a tall backrest. I used to lean back against her and at times I realized she was asleep. Coming back from Ocean city NJ once we looked like the car in the grapes of wrath with all the stuff we took and bought there tied all over it.

Vesco made a cool one that was rounded and fit on a windjammer bracket and Hannegan later made them for a few years. I always kept an eye out for one. BMW guys used them a lot.

Every time I ride a freshly-finished-for-someone 750, I remember why I like my Vetter. :)
Since 2005 when I restarted working on these around here, I've only rebuilt 2 that had Vetters, and both of those Vetters were in much-loved condition.

Is that color matched? I notice the fairing stripe is a little different, maybe they're just close?

Alan F.... yes color matched by chance ! That Vetter color is very close to the K8 Candy Alpha Red and looks good together IMO. Some swear by the Vetters on a CB, have to say even in very hot weather I loved mine ( still have it, can put back on ;) ).

Actually, you feel some wind pressure at your back pushing on you a bit forward.

I've had many bugs come around past me and hit the backside of the windshield hard enough to kill them.

After it being on there since the winter of '77/'78, I took the Windjammer SS off of the 750F 2 1/2 years ago when I made the repairs to the bike to get it back on the road after our misadventure.  I doubt I'll ever put it back on now, but I have to say I have been missing it a little this fall.  A couple of hours on the bike with temps in the 40s wasn't a big deal with the fairing, but it gets a little cool without it.  I miss it if I take an extended run at 70+, and I've missed the storage space so now use a tail bag a lot.  But I don't miss the weight on the front end, and that stone age fork works better too.
