Starter motor revision
« on: December 09, 2021, 12:12:28 AM »
I've never had the starter motor working on my 1978 CB550F. Ive always relied on the kickstart. I want to trace the problem this holiday. I plan to check the solenoid, the starter motor itself, the switch and the wiring. I was wondering if there's a cutout switch involved? Anybody know?
 Thanks.

Starter safety circuit worked by EITHER swich on clutch lever mounting OR neutral light, can be bypassed
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

I'd suggest using some jumper wires to the (unplugged) solenoid wires (which are probably Green/Red and Yellow/Red or maybe Black/Yellow) on the solenoid itself to see if it 'clicks' when applying power to them. That will tell you if the solenoid is moving inside. If it isn't, you can disassemble it and clean up the [likely corroded] shaft for the plunger so it can move again. When these sit for more than 7 or 8 years unused, the plunger shaft offten corrodes and loks itself still.
