Yes I think this pan will be ok for a 19" rim as well, unfortunately it still takes 2 gallons to fill it leaving plenty of room to throw in other small rusty parts that might be handy to take up some volume and raise the liquid level just a little bit more to cover these 1.85" rims.

Or I could pour in another quart of Evaporust, but that's getting pricey.

Thanks, I did a lot of reading about how long to leave parts soaking, I read to leave it overnight so many times, it must be in the directions.

Some have checked on it every 30-60 minutes, others left it overnight. I've got a 73F heater under the table and a blue tarp covering the top of the pan, I'm hoping for good results. Evaporust is supposed to only break down rust, by stealing the iron from it. Their wording is that it's too weak to steal iron from steel which would leave pitting. I'll post lots of photos in the morning, stay tuned.

I used to use heat on a stop-top range on a very low setting,which made the Evaporust very aggressive.I always kept any Evaporust covered so it wouldn't evaporate,because it will.

Alan, I looked at those original rims when you first posted the pictures and hopefully your correct on the no pitting. My experience has been different though, so it will be interesting to see what the end results are with your method.

Someone on the NGW site posted that Walmart recently had the Evaporust 5 gallon pail size on sale for under $70.US. That is a screaming deal vs the gallon size up here is in the $35 range regular price.

I'm not saying there won't be pitting in the chrome where the rust spots were, there certainly will be. I'm just hoping for no good material to be lost the way a vinegar soak would.

Chrome may be shiny and all but it's not anodic to steel and will let the steel beneath it rust to oblivion unlike some other metals we can plate with that aren't as shiny but will be anodic to steel, like zinc for instance it oxidizes pretty easily but will protect the steel it's plated over even if it's surface is broken with a deep scratch exposing the steel.

The 5 gal Evaporust for under $70 is a screaming deal! We just don't see things like that in the States, I don't suppose We ever will at this rate. Grab those good deals while you can Gents, they may not come around again. I found a YouTube video about making your own Evaporust, he tested a bunch of things head to head and Evaporust of course won, but he did find some interesting results with a 5% EDTA solution (I forget which variant) it worked well but was much slower. He calculated that you could use this stuff with tap water for under a Dollar/gallon, which is perfect if you need to soak an engine block.

In a few more hours I'll be checking on my parts, wish me luck.

The chrome will hopefully be good.
My CB750K6 was stored in barns for 19 years. I cleaned the rolling chassi 2012 with my Kärcher power washer. The chrome on both weels flaked away as leaves in an autumn storm ;D
Those rims were not the originals D.I.D replacements from early 80's.

Even with pitting, the CorrosionX should still keep the elements out for a long time. Nearing the 12 hour point in the evaporust, we'll know soon.

So spokes and nipples are quite good, not new but rather serviceable, you can probably spot the 2 new ones in the pictures. Threads are clean and thread together smoothly.

The rear rim still has considerable rust in the bead areas, chrome is pitted where the rust used to be as expected, but otherwise clean.

I've put the rim back in for another 12 hours.

Thanks PeWe that's my plan. I think the CorrosionX is going to work wonders with all of this old steel, zinc, aluminum and chrome once I get all of the rust off.

I see progress.
I purchase small blue plastic handled Forney brand brass wire brushes(UPC#3227770480)for gently polishing original small parts and it's quite gentle on the OE zinc plating on spokes and spoke nipples.

Yes good progress I think, looking back in my photos it's cleaner now than the front wheel was when I removed it's tire last week.

The rust removal wheels by 3M could be used safely on the inside of the rims to remove the scaly rust. They are a black stuff composite material that wears away as it works.

Yes very true but I'm going for passive rust removal here, nothing more than a soap & water wash with a sponge and a towel dry followed by a hair dryer to dry thoroughly.

5 more hours before the rear rim comes out.

My CB200T oem front rim is in very good condition,nevertheless I used a flat blade screwdriver to scratch-off some of the rusty scale just in the places where the tire bead makes contact so that the tire bead will seat all the way down,then applied a bit of durable silver paint just in those circumference areas alone to protect it from further corrosion.

Alan,this can of S100 Total Cycle is 20 yrs old.. but still hangs onto metal very well,until a heavy detergent wash,then it needs to be reapplied;it can be sticky after first applied and needs polished off.

These wheels will never shine like that short of four figure$ worth of rechroming.

I went out for a couple of errands and came back with my front & rear hubs (hosed off with brake cleaner) plus enough 'stuff' to hopefully fill the soak pan to raise the liquid level enough to submerge the front rim tonight.

I doubt I'll start relacing the rear wheel tonight, but I've got everything I need here at home now.

3:15 left before I take the rear wheel out & put the front in.

Alan,the rim had been on a bike that was garaged.The other thing was,the fork seals were leaking badly and it coated the rim.

The CorrosionX simply says to spray on or wipe on with an even layer. May last for extended periods depending on exposure to the elements.

I plan on lacing the wheels back up with dried Evaporust still on them, when I'm ready to true them I'll give them a hot water rinse and maybe a gentle scrub with a soft brush to remove the dried Evaporust. Once trued I'll take them outside and spray them down with the CorrosionX. Gotta have a dry day to do that though, Tuesday and Thursday this week look to be 🌞 sunny, I wonder if I can get both wheels together by then....

Placing this here so I don't forget to do it.

I do this when lacing a wheel, take a soft drift to end of nipple, when wheel is finished or near finished.. makes sure its all seated.. or it can go out of tune easier and need adjusting.

After 24 hours in the Evaporust I've got the rear wheel out, I'm not entirely jazzed but I'll wire brush it in the morning and reassess, I'm sure it'll look better dry.
The chrome side has cleaned up about as well as I could have hoped though.

The front wheel pics will be last, it's probably already cleaner now than the rear, except for the chrome side, that'll take 24 hours in the Evaporust to make me smile (hopefully)

I didn't get back to check on these wheels until about 1pm. The small parts are still coming out very nicely so I know the Evaporust isn't worn out yet.
I took the rim out and dried it off for a look, I'm not entirely pleased with the progress so I used a wire brush on the tire side of the rim, both rims actually.
The front looked like this when I put it back into the Evaporust:

The chrome side still needs more time to soak, I rubbed the pitting with my fingertip and quite a bit of rust and tiny bits of flaking chrome were loosened, so I dipped my fingertips and repeated the process until no more loose material was coming off.

Then I determined which side of the rim should face up, the rim needs to be flipped over at halftime so both outer sides get equal time to soak, the rim's fit to the bottom of the pan must not be letting much action happen.

So the front soaked 9pm-1pm, 16 hours. I should check on it again after 10pm tonight.

Meanwhile I'll have a look at cleaning up the hubs.
