Alan, have you considering heating the Evaporust up to simmer+ on a stove in a large container then pouring it into the tub? heat makes it work faster.

Liquid temp measures 77F with my laser temp gun, you could bathe in this stuff if it were cleaner and wouldn't cause an iron deficiency.... I'm sure it's weakening with the amount of parts I've put through it by now, speed is lost over time until it just stops working.

I'm concerned with evaporation so I'm keeping it covered until it goes back in its bottles.

On another note the Front Hub cleaned up very nicely with cheap toothpaste and a cheap toothbrush. Bearings are good so I'll leave them alone until they give me a reason.

^^^ Hub does look good, Alan.

And +1, if the bearings test good, run 'em!   I prefer good old Japanese bearings over new Chinese ones

Thanks Stev-o, it's pretty ugly if you're holding it in your hands but from 5 feet away it'll do! Plus it's still got its factory clear coat.

I'll do the rear hub a little later on.

Alan,if you want it to work faster, get the liquid hotter;if not the parts will need to sit for days.

I've got a very full day tomorrow so if the front isn't done when I check it late tonight, it'll spend all day tomorrow soaking too. I could turn up the heater a few degrees, but that's about as far as I'm willing to go. I understand where you're coming from though. I hope that I don't seem to be getting frustrated with the progress so far.

This is the video I mentioned earlier, he tested 5% EDTA 4Na and it works just like Evaporust but much slower. It occurs to me that a nice bubbling hot-tank full of this stuff really would be a great addition to any well equipped shop. Perhaps big enough to submerge a motorcycle frame into.... I'll have to draw that up and file it away, perhaps a bronze brazed tank made of galvanized steel sheet, propane fired heating... an electric chainfall above... Oh My.

Ok, front is clean enough for rock & roll. Rear wheel is back in the goop.

That rim came out of the treatment looking good, especially after your brush.
Those small holes from the factory on the inside edge of each bead:you can possibly put the rims in the oven to fully dry them inside there?

That's exactly what I was thinking Bill, great minds eh?
Thanks, it sure was a long road. For now the dried Evaporust is a rust preventative, I'll give the rims a hot bath and a bake before reassembly.

I'm not sure what time I'll get home this afternoon but the rear rim should be making good progress by then.

I like that coating over the rust that the Evaporust leaves on the parts.

If everyone is as tired of staring at these wheels as I am, there's a nice surprise at the end of this update.

I worked a long day today and barely thought about this bike at all. Got home & sat a bit with a few beers then headed up to the attic to have a look.
I'm calling this DONE! And it's looking even better as it dries.

Ok now for something completely different....
To fit a wider variety of large parts into this soak pan I needed to pop that oil drain pan out of the middle.
Liquid level now is just 1.5 inches barely with small parts thrown in to raise the level a bit, it'll be enough I guess. On my way home I stopped at storage and removed the chrome side panels from the tank. I thought this was a big step for me because I've thought they were really cool from an early age but I never had the opportunity to see them disassembled, or seen how the knee pads attached.
I'll check back in on them in the morning at the 12 hour point, I'll probably just flip them then. Stay tuned.

Actually Bill I took those after dipping the tank sides for just a few seconds to get them wet in order to get better visual comparison to the next set of photos, which should be soon, I've been having a busier morning than I'd anticipated.

Rear hub, cleaned up with just dollar store toothpaste and 4/$1 toothbrushes. I think it came out ok.

And before dark I dried of the tank sides and took them outside for a few pics, and then I put them back in to soak more.

The front leading 'triangle' shape of your CB160 chrome tank covers look like they spent time up/out of the solution? Where as the other sections of them look good. The hubs look good.

Thank you Bill and you're exactly right, I'll adjust their position in the Evaporust pan at some point to submerge the points.

Just before noon I took a look at the tank sides, I'd call it substantial pitting, but they still are shiny. I turned them so that their points are now submerged and removed the gas cap that I'd put in last night. It only had a few dots of rust and a little on the underside, it's beautiful now. Then I cleaned the old chain lube from the rear sprocket and put it into the evaporust, it's in pretty nice shape and should clean up well.

I just gave a very hot water rinse to spokes, nipples & rims then placed them in a 250F oven to dry for 30 minutes.

The rinse water was pretty ugly, what exactly is the point of water soluble corrosion protection anyway?

When you spray them all with the Corrosion protectant,it should take care of it.

You've got that right Bill.

I'm probably going to be mounting these tires myself, it will be my first time. I don't even own any tire irons or rim protectors, or whatever else I'll need. I should probably order some up, does anyone have any suggestions or should I just search around the forums?

Alan, I like these curved style(they're a copy of the Michelin type)tire irons.A pair of these and some Murphy's Tire Bead Lube and you'll be good to go for any bike you own.

Thank you, I do see these on eBay from a few manufacturers, looks like a new bunch of tools I need to buy. I like tools.

Anyone ever heard of the Baja No Pinch tire Tool? There are tons of YouTube videos on these, I found one where a guy had tabbed up his own and it works perfectly, and there is a knock-off brand on eBay for about half the Baja price. I'm tempted to get that one.
