I have been so busy the last couple of months that my bike has been neglected. I finally got out to the garage today, but I ran into a problem.

So I got the carbs taken care of, the electrical, ect. I thought all I had left was to re-do the breaks and slap on my new tires. Well, I got her fired up and I am hearing this ticking sound. My buddy that was over said it kinda sounds like a car when the engine is not getting any oil. Take a look at this video and tell me what you think.

If it is more of a rattle sound, perhaps it could be the cam-chain tension. Seems these bikes can sometimes be fickle when it comes to tightening the cam chain. Scour the forum for some recent posting about the subject. More than a few people seemed to have found a couple different ways to achieve decent tension, and its a good thing to do, even if it it turns out the ticking is coming from somewhere else. the quality of my download video is not great - but it seems to sound OK - I could not really hear any clicking - maybe some clutch rattle/cam chain/ primary chain noise - or it is possibly the sickness we all get in trying to discover what every minute mechanical noise is in these machines...and we all have them....

It's hard to tell in the video but it sounds like a box of rocks and that would indicate clutch rattle.
Try sync'ing your carbs if you havent done it. This should clear that right up!

It does have oil in it, doesn't it?

Adjust cam chain tensioner and re-synch carbs. They both get out of adjustment after time (I'm gonna have to re-adjust my carbs here soon, too... They're just slightly out of adjustment so the clutch rattle gets really loud after a long ride).

The fist time I fired up my rebuilt 550 with the carbs out of synch i literally DOVE for the kill switch - I though for sure the clutch basket was coming apart! Proper synch and the difference was amazing!

I wouldn't call that 'ticking'. It is more of a knocking sound, which is never good. It sounds deeper toned than rattling from the clutch, cam or primary chains. Where is it coming from?

So I took the points cover off and saw to my horror that they were painted black!

Whoever painted the engine must not have covered them during the painting process. So I put on some new points but I didn't have time to set them. Hopefully I will get a chance next week.

And yes, there is plenty of oil in it. However I was wondering if there is an obstruction in the line, so I will take off the oil filter cover and I figure if there is oil coming out then the oil is getting through the engine. Of course that's after I set the points.

As for "where" it's coming from, it seem to be at the bottom of the engine.

Sounds like the bike is new to you, then, and you don't necessarily know the history of it. You should do a full tune-up, including carb sync. That sound is kind of nasty, so I'd take the oil pan and screen off and have a look there. Check for debris and see if the primary tensioner is doing its job. Make sure the cam chain tensioner is working and adjusted, too. Good luck.
