CB350F engine swap
« on: December 09, 2021, 08:19:05 PM »
have a cb350F with a worn out engine that I want to pull and replace with a fresh CB400F engine, including the 400F carb set.  As I understand it this is possible, but not sure about what else, if anything, needs to be done when making this swap.  Appreciate any input.

Not entirely easy. The motor itself should fit the same in the frame.
The clutch is different but using a 400 cable should work.
A 350 exhaust will bolt on. I don't think a 400F exhaust will go on a 350 frame.
Carbs are identical except for internals so that should not be a problem. Airbox should be compatible.
Main problem is the 400 kickstarter. Not going to work with the 350 footpegs. I don't know if the 350 one will work on the 400 engine, maybe.
I believe the shift shaft is in the same place.
I have never done it. There may be other issues as well.

Don't count that 350 engine out and don't toss it, someone will want to rebuild it and it will live on.
Might be easier for you to just find a 400 somewhere

I wrote a long post detailing what needs to be done probably 5 years ago or maybe more. See if you can find it; if not lemme know and I Can dig around for it. 400F exhaust will work, but with 400F pegs and kicker (which will set your feet back 5-6 inches). You'll need to do something to make the rear brake lever mount work -- I cut part of it from the inside and attached it to the outside, or vice versa... can't remember which way it went.

thanks all.  definitely not getting rid of the 350 engine, I just want the cheapest and fastest way to get this bike on the streets right now.

I'll hunt that post that details what needs to be done.

As everyone said it does work.  As mentioned biggest issues are with the rear brake and kickstart lever.  I can't remember which brake lever i used (maybe cb500) but it allowed for the needed clearance with out any cutting.  The kickstart is still non functional, too much stuff in the way.  Worst case scenario, these bikes are so little you can bump start one (i have first hand knowledge  ;D
