New bike day for me.  I just traded in my 2010 Road King for this 2019 Triumph Tiger 1200 XCa.  9k miles…plus the 75 I just put on it. 

It’s a big departure for me.  I recently moved to the Texas Hill Country and felt like I was missing out on something.  I’m referring to the terrain and not all the built-in gadgets this bike has.

So far I’m really impressed with the comfort.  Other than a new set of tires and maybe a better sounding muffler I don’t think it needs much.

Overtime I’ll be adding some luggage.  Oh the choices…

I’ve added some crash bars, new tires and a phone mount.  The original owner had this fancy Garmin Nav rig installed on the bike.  It bolts on behind the windscreen, right above the bike’s info screen.  The bike didn’t come with the Garmin though, so I found a phone holder and made an adapter to fit it.

I also had to fix the front accessory socket wiring and replace the fuse.  My guess is the previous owner tried to tap into the circuit to power the Garmin, but still use socket for other things.

I’m taking tomorrow off so I can break in the new tires and try out using my phone’s maps while riding…something I’ve never done on a motorcycle before.  I’ve always had to memorize road names or pull over and look at my phone when I got lost.

At some point I would like to get a new muffler.  Not anything obnoxious, just something with a little more rumble.

I would also like to add some bags.

Those Tigers are a fun ride and soak up the bumps with great suspension travel.

Congrats on the Tiger. Be aware phone cameras often die due to vibration when used on a bike unless you have a very good vibration dampening mount. Sometimes that's not enough...
Hate for you to kill your expensive phone's camera after using it a while...

I always have my phone with me when I ride, but I guess when it’s in your pocket it’s not getting as much of a pounding.  I have no plans to use the camera, but that’s a thought.  I’ll mainly use the maps.

Don’t know anyone named Rose, so I guess she’s not going along for the ride.

Sorry, must have confused you with someone else or I have a name associated wrong…
The camera’s auto focus and zoom type function along with image stabilization cannot take the repeated vibration and jolts and shocks the MC delivers when it is in a phone mount. It kills the phone camera, not instantly, with repeated usage.
Apple came out with a recent statement and warning it would not warranty phones whose camera dies after use on a motorcycle, ATV, or even bicycle I believe. iPhones and even high end Android phones have had camera deaths on the phone as a result…
I guess Action cameras like the GoPro can build image stabilization systems that can survive it but not our phones.
I forgot to make the distinction that it was the camera and not the entire phone taking a powder… sorry.

David, I did some research on the camera issue and yep, a vibrating motorcycle can cause damage.

Good thing I saved my old 8plus.  I wiped it and updated the OS.  It has no SIM card so I connect it to my new phone via Bluetooth.  I keep my new phone in my jacket pocket and have the old phone mounted on the bike.  I used this setup today and it worked great.

I’ll use the old phone for the mapping and that’s it.  I don’t care if the camera dies.

Thanks.  It’s also cheaper than buying a GPS.  Been looking at GPS map apps.  I have not used any of this technology on a motorcycle before.  If I got lost I pulled over and looked at my phone or a road atlas.

I've been using Apple Maps and its good for point to point, but it's hard or impossible to create a specific route.  I've figured out how to create a route in the Google Maps app, but I haven't tried it on the bike yet.  It's easy to create routes on Google.com and I think I can save them and pull them up on the map app.  Gotta do some more investigating.

I've downloaded a couple of GPS apps, but I hate the idea of paying a subscription.  Can't seem to do much on the trial versions.  $5 a month here, $5 a month there...it adds up.  I guess it's still cheaper than the price of a Garmin.

I suspect your '72 Bonnie was a lot more British than my Tiger.  I pulled some panels off to do some tinkering and saw China stamped on a bunch of it.  Maybe designed and assembled in the UK.  Probably as much British as Harley is American.

I decided today was a good day to ride the Three Sisters.  Been a couple of years.  Since this was the first trip around the loop on the Tiger I decided to ride it counterclockwise from the north side on 41.  I think I prefer cc for a change of view.  Perfect day.  277 miles, 7 hours, 2 rest stops and a third stop for gas only.

Fun stuff.

Rever is another alternative for mapping software. Rever Pro works when you do not have coverage for the cell signal...

I had it installed but never used it.  They have a 50% off deal so I’m going to give it a try.
