Modern calipers strong enough?
« on: December 15, 2021, 09:18:22 PM »
In the process of going through the painstaking process to adapt some modern calipers to a CB550.

Wondering if Ninja 250 calipers would be strong enough for a CB550?? (either single side or dual side?)

They are twin piston, and look like they would work, but wanted to get any other perspectives.

Are you happy with the front suspension?
Racetech's Gold valve emulators work well, but the 550 suspension is pretty crude.

Measure carefully as clearence for the spokes and offsets for rotors can be a challenge adapting other calipers. Additional poiint to consider is thickness of rotor a modern caliper can accept...
So, unless you are doing rotor and calipers your options are limited.

I'll definitely be upgrading the fork springs to Racetech with gold valve emulators. I'll also be drilling and mounting a modern rotor.

I've already test fit the Ninja 250 calipers, and they will clear the spokes, my only concern is whether they will be strong enough to stop a 550.

Compare the piston size and pad area to what you have stock. A few quick math problems should tell you which has more stopping power in theory. I'd guess the newer ones will compare favorably, especially dual discs.

Yes one ninja caliper is fine. Fitting one is another matter.I have them on a couple of 500 pound bikes. You need the matching master cylinder too.

The radial master cylinder is a potent braking component with a good set of calipers... So, yes, the Ninja MC is a very good idea. Stock MC from your Honda is the wrong size...
