75 CB550K Basketcase
« on: December 24, 2021, 05:27:36 AM »
Hi from West Virginia! I'm new to bikes altogether, but somehow ended up buying a '75 cb550k1 that needs a ton of work. I like taking on projects and have several project cars and an old Honda atv. I've also messed around with other atv's and boats, but never a 2 wheeler. This one, I felt needed saved. It has been in storage since 1985 and has been left outside at some point. All that is just regular fixer-upper stuff, but this particular bike has bigger problems. Someone customized it and it's really too ugly to look at lol! It's been rattle-canned black, has tall, goofy handlebars, has a seat with a back that's about 2ft tall, a crash bar and luggage rack.

I hope to find some stock parts for it so it can be out in public again. As-is, she's not fit for anyone. In fact, I really need to throw a cover on it for the time being so I don't get sick.

Anyway, this seems like a great forum. Glad I found you guys!

Welcome aboard! Merry Christmas. I don't have any 550 parts but they are a fun bike to ride.

Welcome from Lake Superior,

As long as the frame has not been cut restoration should be straight forward.  We like to see pictures of before restoration, during, and after.

Thanks, guys! I thought about posting a before pic, but I didn't want to ruin your Christmas dinner.

Welcome from Texas. The 550's are fun bikes to restore and ride, I've had a few and still have a '76 550F.

Take all the crap aftermarket parts off, and the rattle can paint should come off fairly easy with laquer thinner or paint stripper, it will look so much better!  I also have some 550 parts, need an airbox?

Start a thread in the Project Shop are so we can follow along and answer any questions you might have.

Thanks! And I believe the air box is still there and in good shape. Once I get into it, I'll see what parts I'm needing and post it up here. I know I'm going to need a seat and handlebars, for sure.

I'm going to go after the paint like you suggested and see what's underneath. I don't have high hopes, but we'll see. If not, I'll be painting it. I have everything to do a decent paint job (except talent lol). I've done some paint work on my old project cars and a few other things (4-wheeler, guitars, some repair work on friends' cars, etc).

I work on the river, 28 days on and 28 off. I just got on the boat Tuesday, so it'll be a few weeks before I can start on it. Plus, I'm in the middle of 2 project cars that need attention. But I'll get to tinker on the bike a little. I will start a build thread.

Just curious, what do you do on the boat?

Most guys around here with a schedule like yours work offshore on the rigs.

We push oil barges (diesel,  gasoline, jet fuel, asphalt, crude, and some various chemicals). I'm the engineer. Basically  an on-board mechanic.
