LED headlight options into factory bucket that looks OEM?
« on: December 23, 2021, 05:29:50 PM »
So I have a bit of a soft spot for original paint KOs and K1s.

I looking to find out the latest LED options(I haven’t at all been keeping up on the subject) for mounting a OEM style lense into a factory K0/K1 bucket, either a sealed LED or a lense shell with a plug in LED bulb.

Low power consumption is a priority, these are not OEM spec restorations I’m working with.

For example, would the shell and bulb pair from Cognitomoto work for me?

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried this combo? I am interested in your findings to maybe mimic the idea.

The h4 lens with an led bulb is exactly what went in the norton project.

Though be warned.  Not every 30watt led is an efficient producer of lumens

I settled on the auxito motorcycle bulb from amazon.  They are very good for their consumption rate
Tried several other bulbs and returned most for being downright dangerous.  Worse than a 6v lucas electrical system.

If i had the option though, would still run a 55w led.  Because i need the road lit up more than i need the power savings.

It strikes me that in every advertisement of LED headlights the brightness in K and the output in Lumens are presented as qualities. Brightness can be a nuisance in hazy conditions, when reflected by traffic signs and for oncoming traffic. What really makes a good headlight, is the performance in Lux, the amount of light per m2, on the road. Lumens is light going just anywhere.

A good headlight lens can help with most of the scatter, that's it's job. I have an old koito lens and it's worked very well with the hid light I have in it. My fz6 has an emgo bucket and lens, which has fluting for beam control. I have an led in that 1, and I never had an issue with oncoming traffic.
I think a couple of the biggest factors is a lens with good beam control, and height adjustment. But, there are definitely crappy bulbs out there, in all types.

Cibie makes some of the best optics out there. Finding a good bulb that is a LED is difficult because the nature of LED lighting is very directional while the halogen incandescent light radiates in all directions from the filament. This leads to light pattern differences for the LED bulb in a H4 designed housing. Majority of LED H4 design bulbs out there from a million Chinese vendors are pure junk. An H4 LED bulb from Cognito or SuperBrightLEDs is going to be something that works and you are paying for it and them weeding through a sea of junk. They have to make money to stay in business, so don't begrudge them their work.
I am not going to try and use a LED bulb in a H4 housing, it is actually illegal to use on the street, thus Cognito's labeling. The government and many police turn a blind eye to it unless you are blinding other drivers or them...
