Best jack?
« on: December 31, 2021, 06:45:38 PM »
Can anyone recommend a well built, reliable jack for our bikes?

I'm only looking for the type that lift by the frame (so the wheels can be removed), while leaving the exhaust headers mounted in place?

Am I dreaming that such a jack exists?

I used to have a Western Handy air lift;it had a wheel vise to hold the bike's wheel(front or back),then I I used an automobile scissors jack and lifted under the engine with an old folded-up aluminum license plate on top of the jack to protect the case, one wheel at a time for the repair.I'd be 'sunk' now w/o a centerstand..

K&L flat scissor jack is what i love the most in my shop. There is a narrow one and wider one, i like the narrow one.

With that being said, small lengths of 2x4 and 4x4 make a difference, it depends on what exhaust your are running on your bike that will depend on what blocks of wood you will need. You may need some or you may need none. I have no qualms.

I think I have a black widow jack. Works perfectly for my cb750 with the exhaust on, but doesn't work for my cb550.

PO swapped out the original 4x4 mufflers with a 4x1 for my 550. And the wat those mufflers go, they are whack at the bottom of the engine, rendering almost jacks useless. I might have space for a bottle jack at most. Good that i have the centre stand intact so i can get much done there, but my front brakes need a rebuild and i might soon need a solution for my problem.

Put it on the center stand, then jack up the front of have a friend sit on the back while you block under it.

Take a jack and build a block of wood to catch the bottom of the lower triple tree. This allows you to lift the front with the jack behind the front wheel and in front of the exhaust. Depending upon how you fabricate your lifting post will determine if you are blocking the oil filter too much... But, you usually don't need to pull a filter with the front wheel off the ground...

Never needed a jack. Rear wheel can be removed with bike on the center stand. For the front wheel to remove, I lift the front as far as possible, meaning: till the rear wheel hits the floor. Then with one foot I shove a wooden block the right size under the oilfiter. Done within two seconds and has always worked for me, but... my legs are long enough (my height is 195 cm) and the CB500 isn't that weighty.

I've always used the cheap jack at Harbor Freight. It worked well with using a few short 2x4's to hit the frame and avoid the pipes. It also has a few tie down hooks if you desire. The no jack at all theory is the way to go if your back and knees will allow it. I'm looking for a lift table now for added comfort.

I used the center stand mostly on the cb750, and the rest.......but I couldn't resist to get this.......it came with a small jack thats thin to use on the bike while it's strapped, for removing wheels.

I have used a jack like this for a while now. It fits the frame only, leaving your 4 into 4 exhaust untouched. It is available all over the internet, Ebay, etc for a variety of prices. Like everything else of late is likely made by chinese communists
