...sup all, I've got a couple months til my custom frame comes in for my chopper project. So in the mean time I'm thinking of putting a new paint job on my stocker. 1st question, how do I remove the "Honda" decal on the gas tank. Next would be any good links on tank and plastic (for side covers/rear farring) prep. Then lastly links/suggestions on actual paint. I want to do this on the cheap, the paint is in pretty crappy shape now, so I think anything will be an improvment. Heres a pic of my darling...thanx in advance for any info...

sand paper and elbow grease my friend... or a power sander but you'll still need the elbow grease for the hard to reach places. you've seen those cars driving round lookin like they got their arse kicked by a sander? well, they did. and, it was prep work for paint that they most likely ran out of money for... but you wont, cuz you only have to paint 4 square feet.

wait! is there gas in that tank? no... don't even answer that. while your at it. do something about the inside of that tank too. the inside is the most important side anyway. great cleaning skills! oh... and picture 26... the camel toe! the camel toes!

Heffay was reffering to your socked feet in thong slippers. What came to mind when I heard "camel toe" was the kind that women get when they wear their pants too high and too tight.

I'm still curious about the other question, about removing the decal. I may be painting my gas tank this summer, and would like to know.

...hey Mong...just take a thin flat head and gently pry it off...my came right off...its mounted on with little studs..

oooohhhhh.... in that case you are talking about the tank badge... decal means sticker to me... sanding off a tank badge might not be the best idea $:-\$

Stripping paint is easily done with a chemical stripper. Paint it on, wait five or ten minutes, wipe, scrape or wash it off. It might take a few applications, especially if you are impatient as I am and don't give it time to work. Takes decals off too. Won't budge a badge though. You can get it about anywhere that paint is sold. Oh, and when using it wear rubber gloves. It burns llike, um, heck if you get it on your skin.

Getting there.

Recommend a good epoxy primer. You can use some sandable rattle can stuff after you get the epoxy on.

You probab;y know, but just in case.

Watch out, that bare metal will begin to rust immediately with nothing to protect it. I'd do an acid prep before primering.

hey gordon...yep, I've already noticed a few spots start to form. Baton Rouge is the wrong place for bare metal...sunny or not. What should I acid preq with...will kerosine do the trick?

kghost...how is epoxy primer different than the stuff in the can?

epoxy primer is made to go over bare metal,the chemical compunds make it adhere to the bare metal and it also treats the metal against rusting.you will also want to put a sealer over it too.

Nope, not all the same. You can even get self etching primer. The stuff in the rattle can is usually sandable primer. Useful for filling in sanding scratchs only, No protection for the metal.

I usually paint with a polyurethane or a Basecoat/Clearcoat. I don't normally use a sealer after epoxy primer.

Another trick: after you prime you can go over the tank with a sandable primer thats a different shade. Put on a light coat then wet sand it off with a sanding block. Any areas that are low or high spots will show right away.

...well this is etching primer...what the guy at the paint place said was good for bare metal...how is is different that regular primer?

...maybe another coat and some sanding and she'll be ready for paint...

...got some serious orange peel effect go'n on though. Is this normal? The article I'm using says this is normal and will come out after clear coat, sanding a polish...
