The race bike isn't getting the progress I had hoped.  As tool acquisition is taking a bite out of funds for go faster parts.

There wasn't much inline 4 stuff at the swap meet.  But i did pick up a 40mm mikuni I thought would go good on my sand bike. 

But then i saw the price of a turbo charger for suzuki kei cars.  Should I go for blown?

Well, I was pissed off about my attempt to bore the valve seats open.

My brain mixes up numbers sometimes.  Though fellas here suggest 85% of valve diameter as a way to get more flow with stock valves.  My dumbass calculated size for 95% - and took a plunge with a carbide cutter opening the port closer to 92%
Some of my closer pals talked me into finishing the job.  Took some careful die grinding to match the step left behind by the improvised boring tool.  This much valve pocket should let the 602 pistons get a big gulp of sunoco

Since i have the shop all to myself now.  I took a couple hours to fit the 650 oil pump on into the sprocket cover.
I may have got a little carried away with the artistic cheese holing throughout.  But i've always like that aesthetic.

Aside from the big opening by the pressure valve.  I cut that door by the starter cavity.  Thinking thats the easiest eay to get an extra oil line plumbed off this setup.

I'm really leaning towards the turbocharger.  Those little kei car turbos are less expensive than any choice of smoothbore rack setup.  The mikuni TM 40 i picked up for the can-am DS720 build could go on the salty sled for a while.

Do you guys think a brake banjo bolt could deliver enough oil to a T15 turbo?

Work pace is building steam.

Spent the past couple of days working on the cylinder head.  By far my most aggressive port work to date.  The boring on the seats could have been better.  It'll be kinda risky, but so long as it can back up a record run.  It's fine.  Still not done with the head.  Exhaust ports need chipped at, and the intakes have a couple of details to work on

Began mocking up engine mounts.  Cardboard Aided Drafting will leave me with a set of templates for plasma cutting later.

The idea of turbo charging is growing on me.  So i cut down a set of manifolds and laid out a plenum for a draw through setup. 
I don't like the dimensions on this one.  Too much room for fuel to pool up.  Nor did i like the way the material reacted to being welded.  So once some higher quality aluminum ships in, I'll do it all over again.  Only better.  I'll have had some practice!

Hey, I've relied on Cardboard Aided Drafting many, many times. ;D ;D I've even gone to far as to print a CAD drawing and pasted or taped it to card stock to see if what I thought I wanted actually transferred to the real world. ;)

Sure is a lot easier to slice and bend cardboard than it is metal :o :o

Been tinkering away in the shop my father and I built up 4 years ago. 
Before my travels.  Had to reform the space upon my return.
It's turning into a respectable little shop.

Honda part number 13318-323-000 crank bearing D is no longer available.

Which sucks!!!  At a minimum, i need 3 replacements.

So i guess this corner is getting cut too. 
Last Resort - Deburring the worst offenders with trizact 3k and a die.

Spent the evening laying out and fitting up pieces for the turbo manifold.

And spent the morning working over an aluminum bead plate with the welder.

I'll be ordering the hair dryer in 2 weeks.  Should have the motor mounted in by then, and can do more plumbing.
Gotta pull the old 550F headers out of the rafters.  See how much of those I can use as starting point.

Well the plenum got welded together.  It wasn't exactly easy. 
But what a way to spend 3 days.  There's a piece of tubing coming in the mail that will become the turbo inlet flange.
Once i have the motor mounts welded on i'll be able to mock up the rest.

Read about the cross compatibility.  A new search didn't turn up any available nos 650 parts either.

Lots of 750 bearings came up instead 😐

A friend of mine mentioned my plenum may be a bit small relative to the engine displacement.
So i did a little math.
Its just big enough to support stock displacement.

Mistakes were made.  Hindsight 20/20.

With my machinist maybe eloping to the atlantic coast - the 61.5mm gentlemen's express pistons are looking like fancy paperweights.

Exciting start to the week here at the shed.

Through the magic of plasma cutting I've transmogrified cardboard into steel!
So the motor mounts got put in their position with respective fasteners. For want of motivation they haven't been welded in.  While griding the edges smooth and even I thought to myself "I'm gonna need a bigger belt sander.". But i am proud of the chamfer i ground around the parts.  A subtle style move in an otherwise rough and brutish build.

Thanks to my buddy who donated some 5x10 sheets of industrial steel.  There is no shortage of craft material around.  As a side project, i've cut 2 table tops, 3 shelves, and a piece to fix the tractor bucket.  Along with the half a dozen bike parts. 

In lieu of another welding session, i got back to the design board. 
Leading Link Front End - something i decided to put together after my last reality cheque bounced.  Not having $1000 to throw at a gsxr swap, this is the next best thing.  I'm still wrapping my head around some of the geometry at work there.  So any constructive input would be appreciated

Another day of marathon welding and the motor is mounted in the frame.

Quite happy with the results.  There were some tough joints to weld up, and i tried to do em with style.  Some better than others. 

The motor is centered in the frame and alignment is within one half of one degree.  Looking at the centerline between the swingarm pivots.  I have plenty of room for tire and chain.

More Cardboard Design work being done while i wait on a delivery of tubing.

Since i have a beast of a rear shock from the bombardier DS - it makes sense to use it in an offset configuration.
Which has been a real doozy to reverse engineer into my particular constraints.
Fashioning the dogbone and trailing link to offer room for a large spring, while not over rotating and forcing the bike into a carolina squat has been a process of cutting different shapes and punching different holes to literally pen 🖊️ together

With the length of the rear forks and modified front end - the build is on track to fulfill the +10% wheelbase criteria for altered class.

The race bike has grown by leaps and bounds.

From mounting the engine, to bracing the frame.  Now its got the majority of a swing arm and rear wheel!  Still working on the unconventional suspension.
24 inch forks will receive a pair of axle plates in the not too distant future.  Parts for the mekanik special cantilever are in the mail.
Will start on the leading link front end soon enough.  Then it will be able to set on the ground.

Funnily, the geometry at work on this setup is real similar to a fatboy 😅

Still making parts for the racer.

There are buildings with less truss work and cheese with fewer holes.

All this steel should keep the bike on track.

Need to figure out the axle plate situation and hopefully can have the panhard bar together soon.

Almost have a rolling chassis.

Need to secure the axle positions on both front and rear.

But its nice to finally "see" what i've been working towards.

There has been much growth here in the shed.
Becoming a more confident fabricator.  And getting pieces stitched together
Exciting part is the headers are coming along, and the turbo is mounted.

Once some more tools and materials arrive, things will get really moovin!

Took a lot of work, but - the turbo system is 98% done.
Just gaskets and oil lines left to put in place.
Though should probably add a reliable waste gate before too late.

The front end is almost done too.  need to fashion a pivot bushing and loop the lower spars together.  Aligning these home made earles is tricky. 
Rear suspension and swingarm is tacked together - pending delivery of axle plates to fit the wheel and weld that up.  With any luck, the cantilever suspension i made will set at its intended ride height.  Otherwise, i'll have to modify the drag link.

With any luck, i'll have a rolling chassis by christmas.
The hardest parts are almost done.  Will order more engine parts next year and maybe have it running in time for pre-registration

No idea what the bikes number should be.  But it meets the criteria for ACBF-650 as of now.

Spent the last month finishing off some welding, made a tank, added a wastegate, cobbled together a chain guard, and set the bike on the ground.
I am very happy the rear cantilever suspension works the charm.  The front shocks have an unsuitable spring rate, so the easy solution is to put air ride on it.
Next task is to fix the foot controls.  A very rear set of rear sets

Discovered my 2" micrometer is unreliable.  So not being able to find the crank bearings i thought i needed turned out to be less of a problem.

In the meantime - here's an outline of what streamlining could look like.

Not any need for a fat-tire on the rear as only about a half-inch is on the salt at speed. You could bend the bars downward (like tits on a bull) which will allow the fairing to be a few inches OUT of the WIND ;)

I'm a step ahead of ya ol scram.

The clip ons are pretty close to a comfy board track grip.  The rear ninja 250r wheel will only accomodate a 140 (also the narrowest Z rated tire i can source).  The front is a 90/90-19, so when i get around to making fenders - that will keep frontal area to a minimum.  Conveniently flowing out and around the springs.
One thing i should double check before forming body panels.  Do the inspectors want to see elbows from the side.  Cause my sketch just shows biceps.

did make a chain guard.  But won't be able to fit that until i have the racing sprocket on the rear. 
Atttached the rear sets and brake lines   will be putting together the shift linkages after the holidays

Tires OK.............they 'look' fat from the side ;D

Mid-forearm OK...elbows visible.

Yes to smaller diameter springs, front & rear.
