Kick start lever hard
« on: January 09, 2022, 06:44:07 PM »
On my motorcycle, I have noticed that at times the kick starter is hare, like it won't budge even when I tey my best to kick it, at others, it is easy as pie, I can easily kick start while seated on the motorcycle.

The bike runs fine, though. When it is hard to kick, I can easily electric start it.

But i am curious why this might happen.

What bike is this?
You say that the push-button starts the bike every time. Does it make any odd noise?

What kind of noise? Mechanical or electrical(like motor whirring).

Either way, cNt remember anything out of the ordinary, apart from the stRter solenoid, which is normal.

It is a cb550k feom 1976

As I recall, the kickstart assembly can be pulled from the 550 (you’ll want to lean your bike on its left side to keep oil from leaking). Or, you can get some visibility of it from below by removing the oil pan. It would be good to inspect the kickstart assembly perhaps on the next oil change. I think sometimes, the spring-loaded kickstart ratchet can get stuck in a position that might not allow for movement. Doesn’t sound like there’s any issue with engine turnover, right?

So far it runs fine, no loss of power, or funny noises, vibrations.

You may have found another reason the bike was off the road before you bought it or why the PO sold it...
Minimo has good advice on how to proceed. A Google site search with cb550 kickstarter spring search phrase should yield threads where discussion of Kickstarter spring issues have been discussed. CB550 Kickstarter removal might be another phrase to search on...
