CMSNL 341 4-4 repro exhaust
« on: January 21, 2022, 09:20:44 AM »
Has anyone else tried a set? I have some and they make an odd clicking sound when running, I took the baffles (edit; end caps) out and they sound wonderful.
In the "getting the most from stock exhaust" thread in proven tips and tricks, Hondaman mentions the stock 341's having a different number of permanent baffles depending on year. I would assume they would reproduce the simplest type.
I haven't done any more testing due to weather. I last rode it on Christmas eve.

Don:
See if you can count the spotwelds on the back side (bike side) of the pipes. Each set of spotwelds will be a baffle plate inside the pipe.
The original K2 versions of these pipes had 3 or 5 baffles (I saw both, most were 5), then [very] briefly the K3 had 7 baffles, which quickly went back to 5 after that until the end of production. Honda issues a special 'Warranty support" bulletin for those 7-baffle pipes because many of them were rusting through before the 3-month bike warranty was over, so Honda replaced any set that came in for rusted pipes until 1975. The 7-baffle pipes simply never got hot enough inside to run the moisture out. The 3-baffle pipes were only slightly noisier than the 5-baffle versions, but I'd bet they lasted the longest of all because they could dry out so fast.

After that recall I checked the bottom drain hole (where the pipe meets the muffler) on my own and discovered the 2 left side pipes were clogged. Ever since then I check the holes twice every year to make sure they are open, and clean them out with solvent.
See SOHC4shop.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

Thanks for the tip, I'll do that.
I opened the drain holes after coating the insides with the Eastwood inside the exhaust paint. I used their exhaust manifold paint on my 40 chevy over 30 years ago and it's just starting to turn brown. It never peeled or flaked. I'm hoping for the same results in the 4-4's.
I did get visible condensation in the bottoms of the mufflers riding it on Christmas eve at 45*F. I went back out (less end caps) and wrung it out good. This bike had pods and big jets when I got it, it's back to stock jetting and air filter but I'm wondering if it needs K3 jets to match the pipes, I'll check the plugs after I can ride it more.

Don, how did you remove the baffles on 341 pipes?  My understanding is the baffles are welded in.  Can't see them coming out without really buggering up the pipes.  I know the end restrictors will come off but didn't think the actual baffles would/could come out.

I bought a set from CMSNL about 2 months ago and they were perfect, with no clicking noises.

Mine came from Yamiya and were called “no number pipes” .
The sound is symphonic. I left the removable rear baffles in, they are like small glass packs.

Correct, I meant I removed the end restrictors. Maybe they just weren't tight enough.
I also have a bike with Yamiya no number pipes and love them. None were available when I bought these. There were reports of Indonesia manufacturing taking a serious hit with covid and volcanoes so I wasn't sure if the no no.'s would return.

Thanks for the clarification Don.  Yes, removing the end restrictors does give a nice sound.
