Stuck steering stem bearing
« on: January 20, 2022, 01:51:56 PM »
On my CB750 K7 frame someone pressed the lower steering stem bearing too far up in the frame opening. It is a tapered bearing, which I think is not stock.

I do have a slide hammer with an appropriate puller, and easily managed to pull the upper bearing. But for the lower bearing there is now no edge for the slidehammer to pull against.

Anyone who has a neat trick to get it out?

I used a die grinder with a small disc to make a cut above the race, then ground a long drift pin to catch the edge from the top. You might consider re-using it if your new bearing matches it.

if you run a bead of weld around the bearing race and a piece of scrap metal to it , as it cools it will shrink and you can use the scrap piece to pull it out

alternately heat the outside of the frame which should allow it to drop out

Why do you think it's too far up in there?  It has to be up against the stop.  Which it is.  More likely someone did not use a large enough (or one at all) spacer underneath the lower bearing on the lower triple.
If it works good, it looks good...

I used a die grinder and a carbide burr to grind most of the way through in two places, broke it with a chisel.
Messy and tedious but I don’t have a welder.

Got access to a welder?

Zap a bead around the surface of the bearing.  When it cools, should be easier to tap out.

You didn't hear that from me 😎

Yes I have both a TIG welder and a Dremel. Will decide which to go for and give it a go.

Thanks for any input. Had thought about the Dremel, but wanted to collect some experience from others.

Here's the "official tapered bearings thread" if you have any questions about the install...

Alternatively..... pack a small bag of crushed ice in the bearing (it will shrink) and heat up the headstock with a paint stripper style heat gun (it will expand). Often, the race will just drop out!
