CB750 Clutch Lifter Plate
« on: February 04, 2021, 07:18:35 PM »
I bought a used complete clutch for my latest CB750 project - complete with a broken lifter plate of course !
Reading some old threads here, it's been stated that the clutch will not work properly if one of the "ears" is broken.
Mine has only broken off the very end piece, so the the spring looks like it sits ok on the remaining flat part of the plate.
So - can I use this or do I need a new one ?

Thanks guys - I have put the clutch in the bike but the gear change can sometimes be a bit clunky and that makes me think the lifter plate could be the cause.
Just wonder if anyone has run a broken plate and whether it causes a problem or not.

Haha - I do like dad jokes !
In the end I removed the broken plate and had it welded. Gear change is much better now.

Did you torque down the lifter plate or crank it right down to the posts like some suggest? (although I don't get how you can disengage the clutch if you've effectively negated the springs)

Aha! The HF red bike lift! Great item for the price. Some one out there makes lifter plates from billet.

The lifter plate is supposed to touch the pillars, if the clutch is assembled properly there should still be movement left in the springs to allow the lifter plate to push the pillars and move the pressure plate at the rear.
The most common reason for breakage is althoughthe rear pressure plate can be fitted 4 ways( 4 holes and 4 pillars)  only 1 is correct and allows the pressure plate inner splines to "mesh" with the hub outer splines, if wrog the pressure plate is held off the centre efectivey shortening the pillars and making it impossible to compress the springs enough for the lifter plate to touch the pillars.
Its been a long time since i read the proper Honda manual but i think its mentioned in there, just people either dont read it or dont understand it

I don't recall now what I did but I'm sure I followed the service manual's spec whatever that was.
