the special-est honda special tool
« on: January 24, 2022, 05:33:54 PM »
Something has been on my mind lately.  Might be a weird question.  But im scratching my head with it.

How in the world did the honda factory align hone the 500/550 cam shaft bearing surfaces!!!?

Been watching chevy big block builders use the align honing shaft.  But those work because the bore is open at both ends.
Honda camshaft is captured between clamshells.
I can hazard a few guesses.
Like a well dressed grinding wheel?  Round nose end mill?  Im sure they had a very practical approach in production.

I'm not letting this one keep me up at night.
But it is something i'll have to approach in order to refurb a 77 rockerbox.
On my quest for shiny smooth engine performance

I'm with you, there must a really cool setup to do that because there doesn't seem to be a logical solution.  I hope somebody knows...Hondaman?

I seem to remember a picture of a bar withs&zed cutters driven by a bevel box in the middle used on something like a Bridport mill

That makes total sense.  So long as the heads and valve covers were fixed neatly in their holders.  They could probably move quick down the factory line with that.
