Straight line performance tire choices? ECTA 4/24 link

  I do not care about rounding a corner on this bike, ground clearance not an issue, it will be for straight line performance 1/8 to 1/2 mile. cb750, aftermarket swingarm. +1 welded stock, +2 +4 or +6" aftermarket.
 
  I'm frustrated with trying to match brands and types of tires. 19" front and 18" rear as wide as the chain will allow. Modifications are OK and preferred. The 1/2 mile folks want speed rated H or V and radials.
  This thing will probably go fast a few times but be more of a show bike in reality.

I always ran a 130/90/17 Metzeler or a Continental.
Neither had much trouble holding back a stock 76F1SS.
Once warmed up.
But I always ran a 18/45 530RK for interstate speeds.

 M&H is advertising a 4.5"X18" front runner as a DOT motorcycle tire. They have 28" tall and a 4.5"X16" that is 27" tall.

Im leafing through the Fat Book trying to find something for ya.  Which at least vaguely resembles a drag radial.
Aaannd I'm stumped.  You'd think Drag Specialties would have a p/n for a drag bike tire 🤷‍♂️

Didnt even see the shinko smoothies

 I saw that on M&H's page and Summit, I didn't mention that the 1/2 mile folks won't allow a drag slick or a bias ply, which I do not understand.  I think they are used to the Hayabusa (superbike) types. I may need two different rear tires if it goes 1/2 mile or longer racing.

If you were running a 200r17 rear the tire selection would be easy!

Was even flipping through the v-twin section for r18 tires.  Cruiser types usually have a flatter top.  But many are bias ply so *poop*

Not certain the power level of your package or exact wheel base but I've not had good luck with any brand 18" tires with my bike setup.  I spent a lot of time doing compound research and purchased numerous tires over the years.  I never found an 18" tire that met my needs for launching my bike. I relented and installed a 17" rear rim so my choices for sticky tires would increase. My tire of choice is the 17" Shinko Hookup in the 180 size.  Bill has had some success with an 18" Shinko tire on Purple Rain. I think Trey has run some low 11 second passes on that tire. Check with Billy as to which tire he uses. Keep in mind that Purple Rain has a much shorter wheelbase than my F3 and they don't launch that bike nearly as hard as I leave with my bike. That tire has limitations they haven't reached yet and you may not either with your bike. Let us know what you come up with and the results. Tire technology has changed a lot since I experimented with 18" diameters over the last 25 plus years.

In his initial post I read straight line performance,  1/8th mile to 1/2 mile. Sounds a lot like dragracing to me but I could be wrong. You know how my mind works🤣

For anything drag racing related, listen to Frankie…🙄

For 1/2 mile speed run, I’m sure the Shinko hookup is still a good tire at the speeds the bike is capable of(modern bikes go faster in 1/4 mile mph)

If the 1/2 mile is a timed ET run on asphalt as well as MPH, a rounded profile drag tire like Frankie’s Shinko makes sense.  It it’s a max MPH only run, the launch doesn’t matter.  You will reach maximum mph regardless of the first 100ft acceleration.  Perhaps something like the Road Race Continental CR3 (CR for classic racing) would suit you there(18” tires).  It’s still a DOT legal tire, but is a grippy set not expecting long mileage.😎

Things would change for stuff like Bonneville Salt Flats as initial launch means nothing, it’s about very gradually increasing speed because the salt traction is similar to packed dirt.

 For clarification I'm primarily thinking 1/8 and 1/4 mile drag racing on pavement but there is a half mile airport event not too far away that sounds like a blast. They don't allow drag slicks or bias ply tires though. I'm not opposed to wheel swapping in that case. The PO is taking his Busa and dropped a hint he'd like to see his old 750 there.
 
 The reason I asked about 18" is I have a 3x18 Lester mag and a 3.5x18 wire spoke DID rim. I do have a set of stock width cb750A rims laced up to hubs.
 
  It appears I apparently will need different rear tires for either type of event. The bike in question is 836 with compression, cammed, carb'd  and ported.  If I get brave there is a turbo or a stroker but I'm not sure either is up to lasting as a race engine.

I keep looking at RevZilla tire finder.  And the Heidenau continues to be the more available option.

Avon is out of stock at rz but they make classic sized radials.

  And by saying "straight line" I was trying to avoid the obligatory lecture about ruining the handling by going maximum width on the rear. ha!
 
   One bike is getting a 16x5" M&H slick for sure. I have too many toys and my probable ADD gets in the way of doing just one thing.

About the best compromise would be a set of radial DOT road race tires.  They are street legal, near full slick compound, and meant for high speed.  They will not, however, offer you the launch grip of a Shinko Hookup 180/17 rear tire.  You’d need a 17” rim for that one though.

Continental CR3 road race tires or something like it may be your best bet. But thy match to 18” front wheels….

Bottom line, in the end you will likely not get the results you desire from that 16" tire. I regret all the time, money and effort i expended chasing a 18" tire simply because i had a wide 18" rim. In the end, I had to be realistic and convert to a 17" and in order to source a sticky compound tire to suit my needs. It just wasn't worth me chasing my tail all that time. I knew better on the front end  of the build but paid the price on the back half. Overthinking is not a good thing sometimes.

Probably a safe bet.

Majority of cruiser tires are H rated.
Even the oem v-rod pirellis.  Seldom see a W rating.  Much less a ZR

Assuming early K chain location...........for the 1/2-mile I would mount an 18-inch tubeless wheel and stay somewhat narrow on the tire profile. No to the 16-inch spoked wheel for high-speeds above 120-mph. Any of the sport-bike radials will do the job without chunking. Who knows, you may like that 1/2-mile 'rush' and look for a mile event........or do a 'run what you brung' at Bonneville.  ;) ;) ;)

Check out the front-brake requirements as most of those airport venues are challenging and some have a sharp bend to negotiate at the end of the run :o  Also check the rules for chainguards and steering stabilizers.

 So far I've seen, steel chain guard, steering stabilizer, recent radial tires, Safety wire, I forget, This event may be off I still have not found a 2022 date, although the PO of this bike says he is going to take his busa.
 Thanks for the advice on the rear width. I've quit thinking of using the same tires for both venues and begun to collect enough stuff for two sets that can swap between bikes. That means they both will need the drum brake.  The cheap Henry Abe 7 star rear rims I was shopping are both rear disc.

 I got word the half mile event is off for this year. The promoters are out west so this one was a stretch for them. 
  The event they do at Gila bend AZ (SP?) was Saturday. Lucky me I found the promoters web page just a day too late for a heads up to the guys closer to it.
  The bottom line is, I don't think I need to find Radial tires now.

Fwiw - my shopping experience for a classic width Z rated tire basically circled back to the dunlop q3

Granted, I'm likely to end up on a 3.5x17 (<--17) wheel.
