74-76 CB550K Ignition Switch Bracket Question
« on: January 23, 2022, 02:04:32 PM »
I'm plannning the clean up of the gauge are on my '77 550F, and want to get rid of the huge OEM warning light/ignition switch combo.

Still want to run a key as this is a street bike. I'm thinking of going with the early 550K side ignition bracket.

I've found the OEM part number for the 74-76 CB550K bracket is 50375323020. Does this bracket simply bolt onto the 75-77 550F/77-78 550K frame or does it need to be welded on? Or does the different tank design interfere?

This literally just crossed my mind mid post, do the '74-76 CB550Ks even have a steering lock?

It does NOT bolt straight on, on the 500 and early 550 there is a small plate welded into the corner where lh downtube and short cross brace join and bracket bolts to that

Thanks for clarifying.

Do the frames have the same shape so this bracket would fit flush along the same contours so I can jerry rig a doohickey bracket behind it to make it work?

Dont know, never tried as i try and avoid the 77/78 K model but im sure something could be done as long as  you can find a bracket as they are getting scarce

The frames are the same in this area. As said the plate is welded to the LHS downtube and a strengthening cross piece between the two downtubes.

The 550 bracket can be very difficult to find, have you tried locating one?

Using the 750 bracket may be an option, but wont work with the 550F switch...

the plate is just a flat piece with a hole to bolt the switch to - you could pop rivet a flat steel piece in there?

Have not yet tried to source the bracket as I am not yet sure if it would work. But if it just bolts off of a stock frame I'm not concerned, I'm sure I can find it on a parts bike somewhere worst case.

Can anyone post a close up picture of what the "plate" that's welded to the frame looks like on the frame? Google images is failing me.

Is frame diameter in that area the same between the 550 and 750? That 750 bracket looks simple and use-able. What about it makes it incompatible with the 550 switch? Wiring? Physical dimensions?

Any reason not to just use a 750 switch with the 750 bracket?

Early 750 has round plug not square and i think tube diameters are different or placement different between 750 and 500
