Early CB750 Steering Stem Bearing Question??
« on: January 30, 2022, 10:29:15 AM »
I’m starting to build up the frame for cb750-1001250. Yesterday, I installed the original ball bearings (37 of them) in clean grease and assembled the triple tree. The bearing cups and caps are perfect and very smooth. When I snug it all up there is some ”notchiness”. Close inspection of the individual balls suggests they have some flat spots. My parts books describes them as #8, 1/4 balls. Qty:37.

Can anyone confirm they are standard 0.250” diameter balls? Ever changed them? I’ll be checking with my local bearing house for availability in the morning. Going to try it.

I do have a set of All Balls tapered roller bearings as back up, but for this project, I’m making a real effort to reuse every original component possible. Foolish perhaps, but there you go. Thanks for any info you may have.

Some guys have bought bearings with 1/4" balls and cut them apart. That may be easier than finding just the balls. I have a container full of old stock ones, not sure why.
My diecast was really notchy and difficult to ride when I got it. It already had tapered bearings, but the PO was a notorious curb jumper entering and leaving college parking lots. The header showed his handiwork.

For some reason people think taper bearings are gods gift but they "notch" as bad as ball races as they are not rotating but sitting in one position most of the time and never make a full rotation

Try a byycle(pedal type) shop if the bearing suppliers cant help, or even genuine Honda if you have the cash

Just checked...$1.25 per ball from Honda.   Surprisingly, races are available too.

Thanks Sean...... some of the online bearing suppliers show bags of 50 for significantly less. I have an excellent bearing house in town, near me. The fellows are extremely knowledgeable, so will start with them, Monday morning.

I bought the balls for my 500 from an engineer's supplies, about 20c each IIRC

I would take a pack.  You would need to mail them up to Canada, that might be a pain?  Let me know.

I don't think "shipping up to Canada" is a problem in this case. L0L!

These came from Canadian Bearings. $10.67 including taxes for 100. Do you have a local outlet?

I will give the Kitchener office a call and use the part number  CSBY4  and see if they will mail it.
If not my Son works in Waterloo and may be able to pick them up.
I appreciate you doing the leg work,  Thanks

I phoned Canadian Bearing the that part number did not have meaning to them.  But I just asked for 0.025 inch balls, that is enough.

No problem. If no luck, let me know and I’ll mail you what’s left when I’m done. Looking forward to the job: if I drop one, who gives a damX!

Good luck.
I have owned my K0 since 1976 and the steering has always been a little notchy.  Finally going to take it apart and see why.

Agreed..... but to be clear; if this was a motorcycle I planned to ride a lot, I would have used an “all balls” kit. This one is going to see relatively little use, so reusing every original part I possibly can, feels right!
