Sanded the top of the tank and seat with 800 grit wet again, and masked everything below the upper line.
The plan was to get both parts painted in one session but I ran out of paint just as the tank was finished.
Not a big problem, just need to find the time buy more...

It's working as planned, it keeps the dust off the painted parts and the rest of the workshop free of paint.
And as the shopvac is placed outside while running most of the fumes and odours is also released outside.

All three colors used on the tank and seat are two-part solid carpaint from MIPA, so it will as durable as any other factory paint.

You paint very well and do good body work prepping for final finish too by the looks of your work! It is going to be nicer than factory finish!

Tonight the yellow on the seatunit was sprayed, and the masking on the tank was removed.
One color left to spray but a lot of masking is first to be done.
If all goes well the black fields might get sprayed this sunday, but I guess time will tell...

Looking mighty fine, bet the black is not going to be fun to mask and paint but the end results will make it worthwhile! Very nice work. Has it been an enjoyable project? Would you rebuilt/restore another Yamaha? They have a reputation of being difficult due to parts not being readily available, but you have made it look easier due to your engineering skills and talents...

Well, I wouldnt call this a restoration as such as I've fabricated most parts needed for the project from scratch or modified them to fit.
The only parts bought from Yamaha are a few engine gaskets that didnt come with the Vesrah gasket-kit, so I really dont know if parts in general are discontinued or still available from the Yamaha dealers.

I just wanted a big aircooled chaindriven v-twin that i could convert into a bike that would allow me to explore beyond the paved roads.
Picked up the bike in stock form back in 2016, and it has slowly evolved from there.
I really enjoy not having to hurry, and to have the time to think stuff through and be able to "sweat the details" is really rewarding.
These projects are really a big part of what makes life worth living, and it's so nice to develop ideas and build stuff to my own liking and standards.
If someone else also likes a project is nice, but the important thing is that I like it myself

I think of it as your own custom Adventure bike.. w/o the Large saddleboxes

Do you plan a long ride on the street,etc.:a journey out and back on multi surfaces at some point ahead ? !

The masking of the white lines are done.
The remaining white areas will need to be sanded back before the black paint is sprayed.
Not a fun job to sand amidst all the masking tape, but it has to be done... just not today

Sanded the areas to be painted down today, and masked off one side of the tank and seat.
Wanted to place the parts so the area to be painted was facing up to allow a good angle for the paint to flow without runs.
However, the placement means that I will have to do one side at the time and let the paint harden in between sessions.
The next and hopefully final session will be 24 hours from now...

Remains to let the paint harden for a day or two and then remove the masking. Hopefully the black paint hasn't been able to creep underneath the masking, would be so nice to just find crisp white lines when the tape is removed... but we'll see.
