Curious,they charge you by the pound or item,looks like they did a great job platimg that stuff. Is it getting really expensive to do like every thing else these days? How much did the rocker shafts grow by plating?

The rocker shafts has not been zincplated, nor has any other internal engine parts.
To zincplate a rocker shaft would be a really bad idea as the plating would not hold up for more than a second with a seized rocker as a result.
Also, all engine internals is covered in oil all the time so the rustprohibiting feature of zincplating is not needed.

Small parts up to 30 cm (12") are plated all together in a rotating drum which makes it quick and easy = affordable.
Longer parts will need to be hung and plated separately which makes it more labor intensive = more expensive.
This batch was a total of 4,5 kilos of smaller parts (run together in one drum), and one longer item that had to be hung separately.
Total cost of the zincplating (incl acid strip of old plating and postage to and from the platers 120 miles away) was 1150 sek, which is approximately $105.
Well worth it in my book  :)

Always somewhat of a struggle to fit piston circlips and rings, and a damaged nerve that renders half of my right hand constantly numb doesn't help...
But hey, got there in the end and now the cylinders are fitted  :D
On to the heads...

I remember working on a guy's 1984' XV1000 Virago and it had some kind of flashy 'gold' plating all over it,from the factory at Yamaha.
I asked him if he or a previous owner had done that;he said it came that way from the factory.

I chose to have all steel parts yellow zinc plated.
Partly because of the enhanced corrosion resistance compared to clear zinc plating, but mostly because it will brake off from the silvery engine look from the vapor honing and will match my yellowed stainless exhaust and the planned paint scheme  :)

And yes, the opening in the sprocket cover was cut by me.
Partly for weight reduction but mostly for estetics.
The stock TR1 runs a fully enclosed 630 chain drive that of course is great for chain life, but it really sucks in every other aspect...

This weekend was spent lapping the valves, reassembling the heads and fitting them to the engine.
Feels good to have the engine sorted soon  :)

The engine is now done  :)
Just realized that somewhere along the way I seem to have forgotten that the bike I'm building is for offroad use...
Oh well, I'll just give it a wash once in a while  :)

The nice,smooth vapor blasted shine will allow dirt,etc. to slide off the surfaces of your engine.
Does this engine weigh more than 200lbs. ?

Good question, had to find out  :)

The hanging engine weighed 82 kilos.
The slings and front motor mount needed to hang the engine up weighed 1.4 kilos.
So the engine as pictured with no oil weighed 80.6 kilos = 178 lbs.

As the engine is a fully stressed member of the chassis, the reassembly is more a process of fitting all the different chassie parts to the engine, rather than fitting the engine to the chassis...
The white slings are just standard lifting slings, nothing special about those.

Frame, swingarm, rear frame, forks and front wheel back on.
Need to modify a rear sprocket (one tooth smaller) before fitting the rear wheel, so that's whats next on the agenda.

The engine/trans assembly is the 'Hub' of the motorcycle;as you said,everything else bolts on to it  ;)

Rear sprocket modified to fit the CB750 rear hub, and the weight is down another 116 grams  ;D
And so the onewheeler is now a twowheeler again  :)

Things are trundeling along as planned so far  :)
Since the bike has been tried and tested for two summers already, I'm in no rush to get it done.
I do quite enjoy sweating all the small things like the endcaps I found for the subframe tubes. The devil is in the details...  ;)
Also made a new arm for the rear brake plate that turned out 170 grams lighter than the stock arm. Not much, but a couple of grams here and there adds up along the way...  ;)
And now that the exhaust manifold I made out of stainless is back on, I'm even happier that i went for the yellow zinc plating as it compliments each other nicely  :)
