1976 CB 550 Brake Pedal clearance
« on: March 13, 2022, 10:27:00 PM »
Hello Group,
The brake pedal of my 550 hits the exhaust when pressing hard; therefore I have to keep the pedal high (uncomfortable) and I have to keep the free play very small to have enough braking power before the pedal hits the exhaust.
I run David Silver reproduction exhausts.
Any solutions to the problem?
Thanks
Tancredi

Either pedal bent after a small off or from wrong model
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Post pics.  Could be helpful.  Is it possible the exhaust itself isn’t positioned properly?  With certain exhausts, you can actually roll it in more toward the frame or outward by loosening the headers up at the exhaust clamp studs and rotate the header pipes.

I have two 500s. One with original 4/4 and one CMS/DS pipes.
Just looked and my bike with the DS pipes the run of no 4 pipe is about 1/4 inch further out than my Honda system. The brake pedal gets close when full depressed. The pedal undepressed is sort of level with the peg and that suits me, but if it were adjusted down it might well hit. The mounting plates used for the DS exhaust were the original and were a bit bent, plus the point where they mount to the frame on this bike looks also a bit out. So this may have some bearing on this.

Here we go.
One photo shows the unrepressed pedal, one shows the fully depressed hitting the exhaust and one is a view from above showing the relationship between the pedal and the exhaust.
I have to say that I have adjusted the free play to a minimum and the pedal height to high to try to compensate for this and that it is not comfortable. Thank you for your ideas.

This -- have you tried it?
