What would you do?
« on: February 17, 2022, 08:16:55 PM »
OK...while I was at work today, my wife was out walking our dogs with a stroller for the old one, which usually has to ride the second half of the trip home (12 year old Maltese). It snowed about 12" yesterday and the sun came back out today, so the streets are wet and slushy everywhere.

Here's what happened: at an intersection in the neighborhood on the main drag thru our subdivision, at a 4-way stop, she was waiting her turn to cross the street as a couple in a stopped car to her right were smiling and watching her and the pups (they are cute, I gotta give 'em that!), when a guy in a pickup truck approached the 4-way stop, slowing down (as normal), then turned into the slush, accelerated and ran the stop sign at high, accelerating speed, to completely soak her and the dogs, cart and all. The people who were watching her were also shocked, staring with their mouths open, couldn't believe what they just witnessed. No one got the truck's ID, except it was a grey pickup.

So...what would you do?

Around here that qualifies as assault and probably hit & run. I'd file a complaint at minimum.

The authorities aren't likely to do much without a pic or license #. I've been known to stake out a spot on a street hoping to see a vehicle pass at the same time on another day. It didn't work but you never know.
I did pick up a couple empty beer bottles and return them to the yard of the guy that lost them out his window once.

Very sorry to hear that.
It is mentioned in the UK as as a specific example under The Road Traffic Act 1988. Sect 3.
"A person is to be regarded as driving without reasonable consideration for other persons only if those persons are inconvenienced by his driving.
Examples of Inconsiderate Driving:
Driving through puddles causing water to splash on pedestrians."

But reality is without pic, dashcam or plate as with many injustices, that's it. It ruined the day, don't let it ruin tomorrow.

lots of pricks in this world.
You'd have to prove intent, or carelessness ....gather witnesses, etc....to make a case , and have the police care, there would probably need to be " injuries". .....glad there weren't.
It had snowed, there's slushy, wet roadways.......
How does someone prove someone ran a stop sign without corroborating witnesses or video?

I don't think I could do anything.

Like already said in UK its a specific offence but you need id and witness.
Personally, if i was certain who it was i would exact revenge working on the pricipal of hitting in the wallet not physical.

On a purely personal note Mark please give your beloved my best and if i was nearer i would be round with doggy(and wife) treats.

So unfortunate and disappointing.
Lots of folks run stop signs here, they also run red lights. I never launch out when I get a green light.
All the best to yours, glad no one was hurt. I don't think there is much that can be done.

So...what would you do?

Sadly, there are people who watch for opportunities after rain or snow to splash pedestrians. They think it is hilarious, the same mentality that thinks rolling coal on people is hilarious.  Might even be the same guys doing it. Pretty stupid and yet another reason why I think public flogging should be brought back. 😉

Even with a positive ID, hard to say if it complaint would go anywhere. So the best thing to do is watch out for #$%*s in that situation, forget about it and move on.  Sorry your wife had to deal with that and happy to know she wasn’t hurt. The potential for injury is there, something the idiots may or may not consider.

Aye. I've been in trouble for doing that without sufficient proof before, though.
So far, all I can say is that, had I been there, I'd have his plate and good description of the vehicle (a little more than "grey truck"), and the ID of the folks who were in the car awaiting my wife to cross the street in front of them, and who were obviously as shocked as my wife - she said that car's occupants had their mouths hanging open after the truck purposely ran the stop sign, right in front of them, to soak her. Most of the neighborhood knows us, probably because of the doggy "stroller" for the old one. She's not even our dog: we were watching her for a neighbor friend who got sick and went into the hospital, then died of cancer she didn't know she even had. I think the dog is still wondering what happened, too? :(
