The Starting Ritual

Starting ritual for older non-electric start machines: Must be followed fairly closely

1. Retard Spark--On Indian -turn AutoLite distributer clockwise when looking down at it.
    If spark is left advanced, the engine may fire when you're partway down the kick stroke--probably causing you pain.
2.Turn on gas-tap bowl of (Linkert) with wrench.
3. Fully choke carb--butterfly and/or rag.
4. Make sure foot clutch is fully engaged--tilted backwards probably-depending on set up.
5. Trans in neutral
6. Kick over 5 or 6 times until gas is running out of the air intake.
    If you have succumbed to the Great Aircleaner Conspiracy,
    you can't tell anything when you reach this point.
7. On a warm day, open the air intake butterfly all the way--take out rag.
8. Turn on ignition
9. Give half throttle
10. Kick it like you mean it.
      If you don't give it everything you have, the bike will recognize this and probably not start.
       On each succeeding kick you need to hit it as hard as you can.
       If you screw this up and get the bike flooded and slightly warm but not running
       you're going to have to wait a while then try again.
11. Once the bike is running, fully advance the spark.
12. That's it--hit the road!

Note: Not to disparage, but by contrast, most SOHC Fours can be kick started with ignition on and the dip of a toe.

What, no freeing the clutch first? ;) (or is that only on British bikes?? ;D ;D)
Most CB750's in good condition can be 'kickstarted' by hand, its only 184cc and a long lever to turn it   
(if they are on workbench so your not bending over, its easy)
Its one way to check everything is as it should be ;D ;D

I have a '67 650 Triumph and you definitely have to free the clutch, but not with the
Indian over the last 40 years. Yikes!

And I thought this was going to list the various chants, cuss words, snapping og precious items, etc...
The only times I've ever had trouble starting a bike is when someone's watching! ::)

My starting ritual involves 1lb French, 1lb Sumatra, 1/2lb mocha java.  About 2 heaping tablespoons of grounds per mug.

Speaking of flying through the day... I've been scratching my head on why mine wouldn't start.  I figured the gas had to be good because I always put Sta-bil in it.  Famous last words.  As a last resort, I drained the float bowl and put new gas in.
My starting ritual is a little different;
Choke all the way down
Spark fully retarded
Throttle closed (gas on, of course)
Kick through 4 times
Up the choke 2 clicks
Turn on the key
Throttle still closed, find TDC and push through

Started first time !
Went for first ride of the year
2nd Yahoo of the year

My '50 Panhead would start first kick with the right ritual. Couldn't start it with a gun to your head otherwise. Made it theft-proof.

My Indian starts 1st kick too if ritual is followed-even after sitting for months !

My '64 DuoGlide was the same way.  If you didn't get it right the first time, you hoped you were parked on a hill.  It was fun to get guys to try to start it without telling them about the spark retard.

I don't know about Harley's, but all you have to do on an Indian is push the pedal through.  That's waht gets a lot of experts.  They'll kick the beans out of the bike and then I just stradle it and push through all calm-like.  It's been fun to watch a couple of reactions to that.
