Where do red cb500 tanks come from
« on: February 23, 2022, 07:16:23 AM »
I’ve seen some cb500 tanks that are completely red. And they never have the black paint decal on the sides. I’m just curious how does this happen? Is it patina from another color? Why does the black paint just disappear? Looking online it seems Honda never made a cb500/550 in red.

Funny, my buddy has a 500 with a matte burgundy-like tank and black side panels.  Does not look like it was ever re-painted.  Even the tank looks like it has dulled to a flat looking finish over many years, it was not painted with matte paint at all. He’s had it for about 20 years and honestly it doesn’t look like anything on this bike was ever modified in anyway before he bought it- or after. I always wondered where that color scheme came from too.

The only "solid" colour Honda used on the 500 was black and that was never officialy sold in US.
They did have Flake Sunrise Orange and Boss Maroon Metalic (both have black sides) on the 550 and the tank shape is identical to 500 so could have been transplanted, stripes between black and colour are different 500 to 550, same shape but different width and sometimes gold

Tanks can be repainted, that's how you get any non-factory color.

Oh, that’s definitely it then.  It’s a well faded boss maroon metallic with black side covers. So that checks out. I had a boss maroon metallic 72 CB350 twin, but it didn’t fade the same. It still had a little more luster than his bike does.  His faded to almost a reddish brown, no sparkle or metallic fleck is very visible anymore.
