New (zero posts) Members Selling Parts????
« on: March 25, 2022, 06:50:10 AM »
I posted a request for a part in the “Wanted” section and here’s the second response I’ve had from a new member with zero posts. I replied respectfully that I don’t deal with “unknowns”. Does anyone else see this disturbing trend or am I just getting paranoid?

Happened to me, and it's happened to others. Weird to think that someone is monitoring here in order to pull off relatively small scale scams, but there you go.

It's one of the latest in a long list of scams aimed at getting your money.   It's on this and other forums and nearly always ask to contact him or their friend outside of the forum. Dont fall for it.

You are correct six, that guy is a scammer, and is all over the internet; he just posted "PM sent" in response to a wanted thread on a completely different forum. We haven't had this type of scammer for a few months now, but they are usually easy to spot. Did you know that if you click on a member's profile, then click "show posts", it will show posts that don't count, like those on the classified boards? This particular scumbag has two, both replies to wanted ads. Time to nuke him. >:(

We got burned for $50 last year when Paul got excited about finding an upper triple tree for the 70' CB 450 to replace the broken one. He was searching FB marketplace and a guy said that he had a friend with one. The guy responded quickly right up until Paul sent the money and then he ghosted us. Ricky Racer saved our butts with a complete upper and lower triple tree for the same price, what a guy. ;D

One way to help a little when buying a part from a stranger is to ask the seller to send a picture of the item with your name and date written on a piece of paper laying on or beside the part to even see if they really have it for starters. Real phone conversation maybe after that. So easy to pluck any random picture off the internet to 'sell'.

Hmmmmm. I just got a pm from a new member patkealy53 in response to my looking for an aftermarket chrome chain guard in the wanted section. This patkealy53 joined last month with 0 posts and he referred me to contact a guy(email only given, no member name....). As I'm typing the email my mind says check this guy's profile...... 0 posts and new member. Anyone else had a reply like this? Or from this guy?

I thought no one could send a PM that didn't have so many posts on the forum?

His words were a copy of my request in my post title down to the K5 on the end...... That might be a clue....

They are actually quite clever.  When they have your attention, they offer other, more expensive (usually unobtainable) parts at bargain prices (but many more dollars than the original part you wanted).  A guy I sent carburetor parts to in Mexico was almost suckered by someone offering a complete set of 350 Four pipes at a very reasonable price.  He got the carburetor parts off me for free, which blew him away...

Unfortunately, there has been a recent uptick in attempted registrations by scammers.  New account registrations are verified by admins with the help of a service which tracks scammers across various forum sites, but a small percentage are bound to slip through.  I made some additional adjustments to forum permissions which will prevent new accounts from sending PMs until they have a post history and that should help a bit.

I just recently responded to a "zero post member" in a post for a Honda XL125 engine I'm looking for in "parts wanted".
He did PM me,I asked "does he have it?" He says "No,a friend of mine who has many other parts does"  >:( I sent the person an email  :-[ The person never responded.  member is "patkealy53".
I still have the email he told me his 'friend' has in my PM's.

I maintain two facebook buy and sell pages. I somehow inherited one (was made admin then the owners abandoned it) and it had been overrun by scammers from many countries. I've blocked about 70 members for posting non motorcycle posts. That has opened my eyes to scam accounts, usually they have few to no posts and few to no friends. Often, they are realtor/ hairdresser/craft store/etc.  pages selling something too cheap. If you google the address, it's often a parking lot somewhere. F/B Marketplace is a nightmare of scammers.
I followed a V max once for sale, it was listed in multiple cities and for sale by multiple accounts. They were very good at keeping up with the lies and explanations. This month it is 14' dual axle motorcycle trailers. Lots of new ones for a thousand dollars down to free.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.
