stuck ring removal Q?
« on: February 26, 2022, 01:02:25 PM »
Does anyone know any tricks for getting stuck rings off of their pistons? I'm considering a warm atf and penetrating oil mix.
Poking with an o ring pick got one loose but I want the pistons to stay as nice as possible.

I would try heating the piston using a heat gun (paint stripping type) and putting some brake fluid on the rings.  Do several heat cycles keeping the rings wet with brake fluid.  If they don't come loose, use a very small diameter drift punch with a flat end and gently tap the ends of the rings out.  This should loosen the rings without damaging the pistons.

I have installed a pr. of plastic soft jaws on my small vise and placed the piston in there snugly across the piston pin bores.I would then use a type of pick such as you described Don to get one end of a ring to come-away from the piston far enough to be able to grab it with my small vise grips, then gently keep pulling that ring off.The ring may snap a few times but I would continue the same process.

soak it in diesel for a few days, then try some heat if it still hasn't moved

Try acetone. I had stuck carbs that nothing worked on, but acetone freed them up immediately.

50/50 ATF and acetone works really well, some say it's better than all of the commercial stuff. The best I have used in a spray can is AREO KROIL.

400* temperature stick on top of piston with Natilda La Burne providing the quick expansion..😜

Or safer for piston, but  more of a fire hazard, use the bearing heat method..
Cast Iron skillet with some 5w-20, piston top and rings submerged, heat skillet
bottom with Natillda La Burne until oil is visibly boiling…. Repeat as necessary..

I'm pretty sure oxygen and acetylene are involved. Fed through a rosebud tip.

I sanded a tiny screwdriver down to make a tool that can pry the end gap open a bit, with some heat and kroil I should be good. They are soaking right now in acetone/atf.

I re-read and think I tried all of the above today. With a few variations except straight acetone. Nothing to lose I'll do that one too. I got the non rusted cylinder's piston cleaned and ready to go.
This thing has both one piece, and three-piece oil rings and one piston has pin oil holes, three do not. I'd say the turbo caused some grief, at least once.
 Maybe Coca-Cola next?

Forgot to mention:
A really good 4000# Karcher type hot water pressure washer
will probably unstick your rings the quickest and cleanest. 😇
Interesting to hold them securely and safely.
Wear your protective gear. Those Karcher will cut a 2x4 off.
Not fast or pretty, but they’ll do it..😳

I have not tried the pressure washer yet, acetone had no effect, nor did coca cola. lol. Something needs to eat the rust and not the piston.

Evaporust will only eat the rust and leave the other metals alone.
