time for a new battery
« on: March 07, 2022, 03:10:11 PM »
i've had this battery for about 5 years and it finally gave up the ghost.  i'll probably replace it with the same one.  question is, to my knowledge these bikes need a 14 amp hour battery.  why in the description of the battery does it say "xta14AHL-bs  12v 12AH"?  is it a 14 amp hour battery or a 12 amp hour battery?

12AH is more common.  I have noticed “14” in the model number of some of the AGM’s I’ve seen.  Regardless of the model, look to the specs instead: 12V, 12AH - and the orientation of the polarity for the cables to land at the correct spot.  Not to say you couldn’t use a 14AH battery, but the higher you go in amp hours, usually the bigger the battery gets and then you’ll run into the problem of it not fitting in the battery box.

I think 750A used a 14ah unit that was just a little taller than stock.

Didn’t mention which bike. I have only come across 12AH.

Here’s another example of 14AH in the Model number, yet it is 12AH…but whatever your bike calls for go with the specs not the Alphanumeric code. It is kind of dumb though.  Also, that battery is a POS, don’t ever buy one.  Motobatt makes a nice AGM, I also like Bikemaster.

  The diehard shown at Advance is BTX14AHL 210cca it's the agm type I'm told they are made at the same plant as the YUASA.

Ah is just the capacity. These bikes will run fine with a 7ah battery. It just doesn't have much capacity if you idle or ride at low rpm. Lifespan may also be shorter, but I didn't run the 7ah battery long enough to know, besides powersport batteries can have such varied lifespans anyways.

This is true.  I rode around on a 12V 8Ah non-automotive battery with no issues for a good while.  I did kickstart and use my headlight off switch as much as possible.  Can’t imagine it had great cranking amps.  It was a security type battery with spade connectors that I had to make a couple lug conversion connectors for, but it worked - and pretty well too.  Held me over until I got the replacement I wanted.

 I have several of the agm formerly sold at Advance, one is 6 years old and the newest one is 3 years old with a few in between. I was disappointed when they went to Diehard.

Do you frequently charge the battery?
I hope to get longer life charging the battery every 2nd month during the winter.  1-3 days.
Sometimes in bike season too.

I rarely charge the batteries since I can ride year 'round.  Although if I havent ridden a particular bike for quite a while [2-3 months], I sometimes put the trickle charger on it if I plan to ride it that week.

@hawaiikid:
Any AGM replacement for a 12A-A type battery will/should fit.  I have a Motobatt MB12U currently in my 400F.

…Funny you should say, I almost wrote about that in the post.  It’s a great battery, but at the right angle I can see that bright yellow peeking out from between the side cover and the frame. All it takes is a nice piece of black tape or spray paint on the one small section that shows to make it better.

Ha ha...no, I maxed out a couple years ago and lost my [free] storage last year and have been downsizing ever since.  But no worries, I still have a nice collection of Hondas, Kawasakis, a Yamaha and a couple Suzukis for good measure!
