Pod Plenum Filter? Interesting
« on: March 16, 2022, 07:48:23 AM »
Has anyone tried this product? Or have thoughts on it? Interesting, ive never seen a pod that connects to the plenum instead of direct to the carbs… looks like it could solve a few pod issues. Eye wateringly expensive for an adaptor and a filter tho…

Disclaimer… I fully understand the stock air box setup works best. My bike only came with 70% of the carbs and the plenum, the full air box assembly seems to be very rare and not reproduced by any company.

If anyone has a full air box assembly for a 78 550 let me know

How do you get 70% of the carbs on a 4 carb bike?

I’m glad you asked… missing 1 float bowl, 3 jets, all the top parts, and various connection pieces… and it’s 78 so parts were way harder to find. It was a nightmare

A scroll through the parts fische is not conclusive. A call to the manufacturer might yield info. both the collector box and filter housing have different part numbers K to F and year to year. I'd hate to guess not having anything to measure.

I recall a forum member building his own big cone filter airbox adapter around 5 years ago.

They just got back to me via email and they confirmed that it would fit my 78 550, not sure what other models they fit but they're description leads one to believe its made for any 500/550

K&N also made an airbox delete adapter.
if you look up a pic you can see how easy it would be to make for maybe 1/10 the price plus the cost of filter

yea ive seen those and there one one ebay that includes the plenum for 125 (not trying to pay that much). I dont think im able to just make that, the irregular oval part that connects to plenum i feel is the issue or id just cut a pvc pipe. If someone did make them im sure they could make good money

I made my own with a $25 intake manifold / “plenum” off eBay, some fiberglass, and a PVC pipe attachment.

Bike worked just fine after. No perceivable change in performance, no rejetting. If anything, the idle was actually smoother.

My motivation was just that the 500s carbs are an impossible pain to access with the stock airbox. I’m keeping the side covers.

The little one is for the crankcase breather tube, it's not strictly necessary but the OEM breather tube was pretty stiff and kinked/cracked, so I kept the most usable 10" of it or whatever and put a small filter on the end.
