rear motor mounts broken Q? possible answer.
« on: February 26, 2022, 07:43:16 PM »
How does that happen? All I can guess it someone didn't have all of the other mounts in place, a crash or the motor was in a chopper frame once.
My turbo motor was welded all the way across. It's a sweet job but since the case is empty and I also have an undamaged one that's empty, it makes sense to swap them.

Had an engine break in that area when a friend crashed/totaled my 750 into a tree. Had the broken area welded since it was a big bore engine to try and save it. Driver needed a little 'welding' also but survived.

I have to say they did a good job welding it. Except...
There are welds visible on the inside of the case, possible spiderweb cracks also. I have a nice K5 case with all B bearing numbers, same as the welded one. I'll go with that.

Even today it might be easier to get a new bike than a new friend. Two of my friends had a similar deal involving a sportster, wet bricks and the rear brake on the "other" side. Bike went through a cyclone fence and 8 feet down into a drainage canal truck entrance. The rider didn't make it to truck driving school the next day.

As I was stripping the last of the parts off of the welded crankcase I realized the left lower mount is welded also, that's 3 of the 4 rear mounts.
The PO told me he was in a bad wreck on one, I thought he said it was a 72, this is a K3 case. Weeks in the hospital, plastic surgery and physical therapy that continues today.

The person that welded this, is one talented individual.

  Forensic Motorology,
I was digging through the tote of scrap that came with this deal and found a broken off top left case mount that was split through the bolt hole twice. Like the steel bolt was ripped out of it.  The PO said he had a turbo motor that hung a rod out of the top of #2, while on excessive boost. I'd bet this welded engine was from his wreck and he saved it by having his grenaded motor butchered for parts. He was wondering why we didn't find the case with rod damage.

It's funny how many small parts I have identified and saved from the junkman. It makes it difficult to scrap it all.

almost exactly where mine is broken, I tried some kind of bonding agent but last time I looked its was cracked again. Will have it welded when the motor comes out for bore job.

If you are anywhere Plymouth, Mi. Chris Razor is the best aluminum welder around. He welded some defective cylinder heads for me. Awesome work but we had an unseen crack that went into a bolt hole and leaked later. He works for Jack Roush, Ilmor, Ford, Caterpillar, etc.

I welded with a modern inverter machine and it's amazing. Makes me look like a real tig guy. I'm considering selling my miller synchrowave 250 and buying a small inverter unit.

Don, shame on me. I had a 9xxx diecast in an engine stand without tightening the mounts. Broke the other side off.

  Aw man, that hurts.
My local bike shop owner's kid scrapped the 9,000 era engine that came in his bike new, it had chain damage but was complete with it's top end and weldable. I told him I drove to New Jersey for one and would have paid good for it. The kid got the stink eye and an I told you so.
Really, the only reason I didn't use this welded one is the bike is not original at all, I have a lovely empty K5 case and well, big bore turbo.
