Painting a 71 Honda frame - suggestions?
« on: March 16, 2022, 01:39:17 PM »
As soon as the weather is right, I am going give my frame and other parts a fresh rattle can paint job.  I’ll be grateful to hear your suggestions for what you’ve used and think works best.

Follow up:

Guys, thanks for the suggestions.  I really appreciate them.  Regrettably, I don’t have the budget for powder coat.  Several customers, from my working days, had a powder coat lines and the results are great.

I have two frames and have decided to do one with HF and one with VHT.  I’ll post my result for each when finished.  For now, I have a lot of sanding and prep on all the various painted parts to keep me busy.

My skills are beginner, at best, so I will splurge on getting the tanks and side covers done professionally. Candy Bacchus Olive on one set and Candy Gold for the other.

I’ve had good luck with VHT Chassis and Rollbar paint.  Satin black or gloss black.  Same for triples and swingarm, etc.

I let it cure overnight, then make an Easybake oven of sorts with a heavy walled cardboard Fridge box and a few heat lamps bringing temps up to 150 degrees for a harder “post cure”.  Solvents haven’t bothered the finish.

Not a spray can but I liked Imron blitz black in a cheap paint gun, I hang the frame and get all of the light I can. Wet down the floor and spray away. When I'm close to done I thin my paint with reducer and wet down the entire frame as quickly as possible. That melts in the overspray.

That said, I've used the appliance epoxy as does a friend that restores Simplex bikes. I also like the VHT chassis and roll bar paint. I've used it on bike frames and chassis touch ups on our drag car. I did the cage with it after I peeled off the powder coat with fingernails and a pocket knife.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

No #$%*?  Never knew that.  And no idea why that would be.  There is plenty of stuff I painted with it up to 10 years ago that is holding up perfectly.

I've used POR15 to good effect after media blast. Topped it with their top coat chassis black.

Don't worry about the appliance epoxy out in the weather, it'll hold up just fine. They've got a stainless steel color that looks great if you're not up to having another black frame.

I used Iron Armor Frame and Grill Paint from Harbor Freight. It is a 99% match to the factory paint.

I painted a spare Honda CL360 frame with the Rustoleum Appliance Epoxy as a test.  After painting the frame I let it sit outside in the elements for over a year.  I endured Georgia weather very well including multiple 100+ degree days of full sun and a week long siege of snow and ice.  I think for the money it is a pretty good deal.

Painting on a budget you can use a 20 buck electric house sprayer and tractor and implement paint from rural King or tractor supply just thin it down to parts paint to 1 part acetone.
The brand for the paint is Majic. It holds up great.
