How to buy used Cylinder Head
« on: March 22, 2022, 07:00:11 AM »
Hey all, looks like a couple of spark plug holes are pretty crossthreaded in my 78 CB550, and since I was going to do a top end rebuild anyway I was thinking about just buying a used head. Im looking on ebay at some reasonable prices (around 100) but what do I look for? I know it can be difficult to tell condition in pictures but anything major I should ask or see? Thanks

500 is same head, only thing you can look at in pics is cam journals

if your existing head is good apart from the plug threads why not get them repaired and keep it - you. never really know what you are getting used unless you see it firsthand...just a thought.

I have no idea if current head is good, bike hasnt run in decades. But I hear what youre saying, new head could bring new problems

Look for moisture damage around the head gasket's metal ring around each chamber. It is pretty common on the 500/550 for them to be moisture-damaged, even corroded, if they sat with wet conditions inside (especially sans sparkplugs).

In this picture, the green lines indicate where the head gasket seal ring sits. Clearly, it would not seal these chambers. This was already milled off by 0.010, too.

Thank you for that! These 2 don’t seem too bad in that department.

Head gaskets are still on and cover eventual corrosion as shown earlier.

How they look like is not visible since the gasket cover the head.
If you look at Hondaman's photo it is just around the chamber under the metal ring of the head gasket.

Had to replace the cylinder head on my 78 550 as a couple of the exhaust guides were well worn. If you buy a head complete with valves you don't find out until you remove them.

I've found that when rebuilding a motor, one of the most important things to getting a good running engine is a rebuilt head with no issues.  Any used head you find on eBay will most likely need some work. [new guides, seals, etc]

+3
I have no experience of 500/550, only CB750.
A good head with good pistons and bores will ensure a fun ride. Ok carbs and ignition.

A domino effect if engine has been used much, many miles/km might be time for new chains and tensioners.

Low milage no problems then.

I'm an expert in domino effects. Not restore or modify enough first time so I have to redo, do, do, do more ...... ;D ;D

With the used 550 heads, I have about 50% luck with the valve guides being good, or not. The ones that have been worn were also the ones in the heads with the locking rocker shafts. I suspect Honda hedged its $$ costs with the later heads by using less-expensive valve guides to help offset the $$ of the added lock shafts. This was similar in the 750: up until about 3/72 Honda used Stellite valve guides in this engine, which can last a LONG time (mine went 130k+ miles and were still not fully worn out). When the injection-molded cases and (in 1974) the upper end parts came out, the guides were changed to simple cast-iron, which last about 10k miles to the wear limit: those machines were EXPENSIVE production machinery in the 1970s, so something had to 'give'. In the 750F0 they switched back to Stellite for that model only, then back to cast iron in the F1 and later heads. The wear pattern is similar to the early engines, and Ofreen here has 150k+ miles on his original Stellite guides, beating my record!

Is there a way to ID the stellite guides in a head?

K1 heads with long conical ex guide without seal has stellite guides, right?
Use of correct oil, not too thin and change in time affect guides.
