That's the Gerex ignition box in the back, I've heard they whine like an old camera flash unit but this one is quiet. When I turn it off it will make a spark and sometimes fire a cylinder. Like a model T.
I cleaned the tank and got the double disc brakes on it recently and haven't really ridden it much since that got done, mostly due to the weather. Dual rotors came with it, but the mate was a different pattern, so I spent a day or two drilling one to match and stripping the color off the F1 calipers.
It would be fun to do a BOM if there was another ratty old hot rod around to show it with.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

Don,the oil tank/cover seems to be sitting low;is that an optical illusion because of the seat ?

Yes, the seat leaves some frame exposed. I've thought of making a sheet metal frame cover to smooth out the appearance.

K1 Hot Rod was named "The Rat Race" due to its former barn residence and what appeared to be a 22-caliber bullet hole through the seat where my imagination says someone took a shot at a barn rat.
I met the previous owner and original builder Steve Egli at a car show where he spotted my 750 Honda display. After a lengthy conversation he asked if I was interested in purchasing his CB750 parts collection. I was, and a week or two later my brother and I brought home a trailer and truck load of parts and bikes. This one was the most complete, so I started trying to do a simple "get it running" restoration while using many of the parts that I got with the bike and already had stashed for a future similar build.
It's a 1972 titled K1 cb750. Steve had gone to RC engineering and purchased a lot of the parts there in person.
The engine is an 836 that I did a few repairs to, it still has the RC rods and 836 kit, honed and re-ringed, re-built ported head, RC 315 cam and kit, Lockhart oil cooler, RC 4-1 header and Gerex ignition firing fuel from a set of Mikuni 29 smoothbore carbs with K&N pods or velocity stacks. It may have the last set of new adapter carb rubbers in captivity.  I put the electric starter back on it for now and set the lightened RC flywheel aside.
The tank got a rinse with Evaporust this winter to resolve a few dark spots I could see inside.
The frame is mostly stock except the 2 1/2" extended swingarm that came in the parts stash, a needle bearing neck set, The two frame bars above the engine were cut so I added the bars from a parts frame and a Scottly made, 754 style bolt on kit.
It got the Lester mags that came with the purchase and a pair of tubeless radial tires intended for a top speed run at a track that since closed. Stock size 19" front and 18x3" rear with a 140/80-18 tire and a new/old diamond XL 530 chain running 18/48 sprockets.
I changed the triple trees from modified 550 parts back to a K1 Yamiya reproduction so the original gauges could go back on and rebuilt and lowered a set of F1 forks with new reproduction 550 tubes to get the ride height looking like a drag bike. The brakes are a pair of polished F1 calipers clamping a rotor that came on it and one that I drilled to match.
The seat, modified rear fender, Lucas taillight and 400 handlebars are off of Tom Campbel's old drag bike that has been on my shelf for years. The brake and clutch have Steve's old vintage Magura offset levers. Rear shocks are from a twin cam 750 my brother had since the Koni shocks I bought were too far gone to rebuild.

In the bottom pic on the right side of the trailer is the Rat Race coming home with us, on the left side is the turbo drag bike.
The drag bike front end is now re-built and it has an aluminum spoked rim on the front, good caliper and a 16" hog rim with an M&H slick on the back. That's my big brother beside the truck.
The dragbikes K6 short block is built with a backcut F2 trans and a balanced crank with MTC steel rods.

No, the rat race is all K1.
The drag bike is the other project I brought home that day. It gets the K6 case for its rebuilt turbo motor.
The former turbo motor crankcase has 3 of the rear motor mounts welded back on. No idea how that happened but with a good low mile K6 case and a back cut APE F2 transmission available I decided to retire the damaged case and well used trans.

Will that K6 bottom end you're installing in the Turbo bike also have a new primary chain and sprockets ?

New chain yes, sprockets no. One is built onto the crank and the other is built onto the clutch drive. I've set aside the German chains for that motor.
I have a set of original Honda chains for the Rat Race when the lift is open again. GS1100 on it right now.

That's the Gerex ignition box, it's a multi spark CD ignition made before MSD was around. The guy that made them was an actual rocket scientist. They say they whine like an old camera flash but this one is quiet, there was also an electronic ignition model a lot like a Hondaman ignition except bigger. They are a hoot, if you turn the key on and then off it will sometimes fire one plug and if there was fuel in that cylinder it will give you a scare. PFFFFFTTTT usually out the exhaust.
I saw a batch of parts for them on ebay a while back and almost bought them, there were pickup plates for other bikes also.

I also have a CDI type ARD mag that came from the same guy, it's for the turbo drag bike. He didn't think it worked but I did make it spark 4 plugs on a test rig.

I got the Rat Race out this morning and was going to ride to the storage unit to swap it for the gs1100 so I can peek into the GS's 29 smoothbores for ordering jets. The Rat didn't want to go without the choke, so I shut it off, blew into the gas tank and it cleared right up. I've learned to not breath back in until I'm a safe distance away.
Yes, it still has an inline filter, a medium size paper pleated one laying on its side. I mostly used it for an adapter to get from the 5.5mm fuel line to the 5/16" inlet on the Mikunis. I may cut the plastic end off and just use that for the adapter. LOL!

I found a fuel hose that reached from the petcock to the carb inlet and it made a tight fit on both ends to eliminate the filter so off it went to the storage unit. I drove the coupe home.
I'm putting a battery in the Nugget so I can ride it to storage and leave it for a bit while the rat race comes home.

I think the Rat is going to get the turbo project's engine case with the new Wiseco 836 kit. I have a backcut trans, balanced crank, MTC steel rods and it's a low mile K6 case that has the late clutch basket, I can put in the German primary chains and get a properly strong cam chain.
All I need is a bored cylinder, new tensioners and a gasket set.
I have a nicely ported head with a big Engle cam and kit ready to drop on.

After my car cruise I put the 40 chevy into the storage unit and got the Rat Race out. I had a few weeks of GS1100 distraction. The clutch was stuck big time, I rolled it outside the fence and locked up while it idled with the lever tied back. After a lot of fooling around I got at least one disc to let go so I can ride, it's still draggy and noisy. I'm going to either suit up and take it on the highway or just start taking it apart.
I may swap out these fake genuine Honda ebay frictions and put some old used honda discs back in it
or buy something else. It has a newer wide basket too, the novelty of that has worn off I just want it to work smoothly.
A guy strapping beer onto his Harley stopped and turned around to watch me go by, Probably had a 750 once.
