72 K2 Fuel Lines and Float pins!
« on: March 30, 2022, 03:52:57 PM »
Hello everyone!

On my 1972 K2, my understanding is that the fuel lines are 5.5mm. But what size are the fuel lines that exit the float bowls for the drain lines? Are they 3.5mm?

Additionally, I'd like to replace 2 of my pins that hold the floats in the carb. They were so gummed up, that it was incredible difficult removing them. Everywhere I see only seems to sell the whole rebuild kit, and I'd just like to replace the pins. Does anyone know of the part number or where I can purchase just the pins! Thanks!!

Yes 3.5mm, I recently posted about some chainsaw fuel tubing I found online that works great for overflow tubes.  As for your pins, You say gummed up, if that’s the case, I would just clean them as best as possible and reuse.  One trick to getting those things super smooth is to carefully put them in the chock of a drill and spin them fast in a piece of steel wool. They will come out very shiny and smooth. If you bent them up and gouged them a little, you could straighten them out on a vice first and then do the same technique except with a piece of high grit sandpaper first, then move to steel wool.

There is a wanted section on the forum you could put in an add or somebody reading this might cough a couple up. Same pin was used for many different years on the 750 round top carbs. As mentioned in the previous post I have doctored some up in the past that were a little scuffed or deformed on the ends with no problem. They are nice soft brass.

They were gummed up so bad that removing them put large indentions on two of them!

If you still think they're good - I'll roll with them. The floats still move freely. They just look bad!

Polish them up with fine steel wool, no drill really needed and touch up the ends if there mushroomed or nicked and your good to go.

you can even use a small file to smooth them back out and then polish.  I try to fix any imperfections, even if they seem to work fine, they are free to float about and could cause a stick.  But yeah, never had to replace one before, even when mangled.

Also, if you ever have to do carb service "on the bike" float pins that slide in and out effortlessly is a BIG plus.

If you ever have a hard time finding anything like that, you could also buy brass rod, 1mm and up, whatever the size may be and just cut your own to size, round off the ends a bit, and be set.
