CB750K2 and K4 projects
« on: March 04, 2007, 10:25:32 AM »
Well since everyone else is detailing their builds I thought Id do the same...Yesterday I got my K4 engine (thats been around many places back from Mike Rieck after he did a great job on the top end (new head, pistons, rings, valves, mild porting etc etc). I have to say Im really excited to try out this new top end rebuild The top end is so clean after Mikes excellent work that Im going to paint the bottom end to spruce it up a little. See pics as it waits painting.

The K4 frame is shown with Buchanan stainless steel spoke wheels -  needs the engine installed and front brake rebuilt (just the master cylinder and stainless steel lines and bled. Reattach the coils (CB900 coils), get some new coil wires, reattach the starter solenoid and carb-engine rubbers installed- new :), new Mac 4-2 (still in the box), and hopefully this will be it. This bike is going to be the trip bike again and already have a few summer trips planned.

Cafe K2  -rear wheel has been removed for fitting new Bridgestone battleaxe and then have to make the chrome chain guard fit with the new RX X-ring chain (currently rubbing). Change the carbs back to the K2 ones (currently have the K4 carbs on their) and sort out the wiring of the custom blinkers - back and front - new wiring harness so shouldnt be a huge problem. Just changed over to the chrome alternator cover so Im hoping the wiring is good! Will see in a couple of weeks. Thats it for now.

I will add that yesterday when I went to pick up the K4 engine it was a real pleasure to see Mike (Rieck) in action - when we went to put the cam cover back on we discovered some of the threads were stripped or not quite perfect so Mike retapped them and then helicoilled them all very efficiently as we sat around drinking his Chimay -does it get much better than this!?  Plus we saw Jerrys (RXGriff) head as it awaits the famous Mike Rieck treatment. We had a good couple of ours drinking fine Belgium beer while discussing, cams, heads, porting etc etc....what a great way to spend a Saturday - and then to go home with an expertly rebuilt top end....priceless!

Now just got to make sure it runs  ;)

thanks Mike!
cheers
Andy

Andy,

You rotten #$%^&*.  ;). I'm jealous. You better get that K4 road ready for the Rocky Mountain Canada to Mexico Tour of '08. That head will breathe well in the altitude. At least that annoying oil leak is gone! Paint and polish will be sweet. You're turning into quite the mechanic lately!

How'd my head look, by the way? Have I mentioned I scored a NOS Flake Sunrise Orange tank and tail piece along with a NOS seat? Got all for $650. I feel like a thief.  ;D  Now I have a full Candy Sapphire Blue set AND a Flake Sunrise Orange set. 2 bikes in 1.

Andy,

You will love those Buchanon stainless spokes.  They really set the bike off
when polished....and no more oxidation.  ;D

Are you guys lacing those Buchanon spokes to new rims? What rims & where are you getting them?

I laced the spokes to the original K0 rims...front and back.  They are designed to fit
them. The only difference I note is they are a little thicker where they go around the
hub.

Jerry and Techy,
I got the Buchanan rims and spokes - very nice combo - but these were given to me so I dont really know the order detials (like how much they cost etc). The spokes are much thicker than originals and really do look very good.

Jerry I tell you in this last year Ive done more mechanics than I ever thought I would - cant say Ive done it all well but having that garage really helps (only reason I live where i do). Yeah dont worry the K4 will be ready by end of the month and Ill let you know how it rides - I cant wait! Your head was looking pretty clean when I saw it and Mikes prepped it ready for making it into your super 1080cc muscle machine! Great news on your sunrise orange find - you can beat that colour!!!  Post some pics of it on the bike when you get the chance! This is the bike you want to ride for the Ride the Rockies SOHC Tour `08.

cheers
Andy
