1981 CB650 Barn Bike....Phase 2: diving in.
« on: March 04, 2007, 06:10:18 PM »
Enthusiasm is as yet unabated. I managed to get the camshaft sprocket released. The top end is off...heading towards lower end disassembly.

I could use some advice on flywheel removal. I've got a puller, but nowhere to go with it as yet.

The bolt holding the flywheel in place won't budge. I've hit it with PB Blaster and an impact wrench.

Are the threads standard (counterclockwise to loosen)?

Anybody got any helpful hints?

Thanks,

Caleb

Getting your flywheel/rotor off would probably be easier if the bike was still mostly in 1 piece. Put bike in 4th/5th gear, rear wheel on the ground, remove the cover, remove the bolt that holds the rotor to the crank (see previous statement-a 1/2" socket set would probably work best), screw the puller into the bolt hole and take a wrench to the puller. Keep tightening. You want to screw the puller into the rotor until the rotor pops off. I do believe it's just like tightening any bolt. I did mine recently with the engine out but I had an advantage - AIR GUN. Came out real easy.

if your motor is already out of the bike and the jugs are off you can lock up the crankshaft by putting a steel rod thru all 4 gudgeon pins and turning motor over till said rod is resting on a couple of blocks of wood on top of your crankcase. rotor bolt is standard (lefty loosie) once you have that bolt out you can use your rear axle or rear engine mount bolt(sorry I forget which) to wind the rotor off

Thanks for the good advice, friends. I'll get back at it once the temperature gets back above freezing (perils of an unheated shed).
