Stainless Screws Sets Fasteners Bolts .... FAQ
« on: March 04, 2007, 06:01:09 PM »
Hello, I just spent quite some time trying to find the thread on where to get Stainless screw sets, and suprisingly using the Search it took me quite some time before I found James Spillanes web site link, so I thought I'd post all the info I found usefull in one post for future users, with a well named Subject so others typing searching may find it easier than I!!

James Spillane makes engine bolt kits in Allen or Phillips head, his web site is http://www.metrocast.net/~spillane/index_002.htm he's a long time SOHC member and have seen many posts about the quality of his kits, and I'm likely to order one soon!

Another source for metric bolts online is www.boltdepot.com several other users have used them with success.

Others recomended this site www.stainlessbits.com

Others still posted http://www.specialtyfasteners.com/index2.html#stainless as there source

Remember above all to USE ANTISIEZE compound, otherwise your shiney stainless will become one with your aluminum engine over time.   If anyone would like to add there comments to this post please do!!

Happy Screwing!

And (I discover this after doing replacing mine) you need to reduce the torque values when using antiseize.

See this thread for details.

This is a good place to get them, pretty cheap, too:

I'll post some photos once I've got them all installed.

Hi. Some suppliers make the stainless CB750 kits with the knurling removed from the allen bolts.

Does anyone know a supplier who makes them with tapered sides on the heads?  I really don't fancy spending hours turning the sides down on a lathe if they can be simply purchased as a kit.

Thanks!  RR

Here are the photos of the screws I just put onto my bike. Went pretty smoothly, I ended up just swapping one at a time because there are a few that are longer than the others, etc... I did run into a problem putting the screws onto the head breather, but that's just because my engine isn't quite symmetrical with the frame, which has be a bit worried... should I worry about that? I've come across some other bits of evidence that the bike's been laid down by the previous owner.

I ordered from stainlesscycle.com on Thursday June 4. He received payment that day. I called today to check the status and it still hadn't shipped. A little disappointing, especially since I'm waiting on them to put the bike back together. I will use Z1 next time I think.

I wish I had known about the wealth of knowledge on this site BEFORE I had gone to ace hardware and purchased each individual screw for my engine side covers. I still have the old phillips screws in the valve cover.  I think I will order an allen screw kit anyway.  The screws for the valve cover are pretty long and they might not have them in stainless at the hardware store.
Oh, by the way I'm a big fan of the anti-sieze for assembling dissimilar metals.  It makes disassembly so much easier.  Also, yes you should reduce the torque values when you use antisieze, don't want to pull the threads out of your engine parts.

Beware of Burks Motorsports!  OR http://www.westcoastmc.com/store/

The guy is a thief! I ordered online. It never shipped, guy would not return email's or phone calls. I won my paypal dispute but I only got a 1/3 of the money back I paid!

Not sure what it is but I've now been ripped off by 2 different places trying to buy stainless engine bolts  ::)

You might try the "buttonhead" allens - I like the look much better than the Frankenbike allens you normally see, much sleeker....

Do you have a source for those sleek looking buttonhead allen screws?

I'm also looking for engine mounting nuts & bolts as well, stainless or otherwise.

Thanks!

And Howdy!   :)

I get everything from these guys, as I live in a rural area and have no local suppliers....

some of the bigger ACE hardware stores have them, too. Home Depot seems to be useless for these.
