Hello,    I hope somebody in the SOHC can help me with this;

      An elderly friend of mine who has well over 100 motorcycles and countless parts ( mostly BMW from the /2 era) has asked me to help him dispose of a complete, new CB750A engine/transmission assembly that he has had for decades.  Bought from a Honda dealer on a whim ( and probably also for a song ). He has had it in his heated shop since that time.

       It is possibly the only one in existence, and though I've been told that Hondamatic 750s were not the success that Honda hoped for...I suspect that there must be riders out there who would love to get their hands on a brand new motor and trans.

     He has asked me to put it on eBay for him;

     But I wonder if eBay is really the best way to find the right guy for this motor ?

     I hope that somebody in the group can point me at the best way to put out the word on this.  Somebody has gotta be out there,  who would be thrilled to find a pristine, never started,  original motor ?

    I would be very grateful for any advice on how best to proceed.

Regards
Grant MacNeill

  • Bought her new 4/75
If you were to sell it here you are supposed to post an asking price. Not on EBay.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

  • Happy with my Hondamatic
Years ago I bought on eBay a CB750A complete engine (dry) still in Honda:s wooden crate for something 1100-1200 dollars free at my shipping terminal in LA region.
Complete engine less than crankshaft+camshaft+carbs, as an example.

thanks Jerry.  So I gather you recommend that I should sell it here on the SOHC/4 forum ?  If that is the case, my next step is to establish a fair value for my friend's motor.  Regards,  Grant

Thanks, that is very helpful.  I'm fishing around for a fair but also realistic value.  Grant

I'd list it on fakebook....

Thanks Steve-O,  that never occured to me.  I guess that the Honda-Automatic guys must be watching the facebook pages too.  I'll investigate that option or maybe do both.   Thanks,  Grant in Toronto

yep,  You've sussed it. He's retired now and in his 80s.  We are old friends and I've helped him flog some of his pristine parts he's collected over the decades.
Methinks I know you ?   I'm the guy in the CVMG, Old Fort York, assist Ian March with the vintage display at the bike show every year.  I have the guitar shop and drive 1950s Beemers and Nortons.
If you have any further ideas on how to sell this engine,  drop me an email at The Twelfth Fret.
cheers
Grant

Not listed yet...just trying to nail down a realistic value, then run it by my friend who owns it for his permission to flog it a a such-and-such price.
if it was almost any other Honda,  a new motor and trans that was never run would be worth thousands but I gather this is probably far less desirable.  I assumed that once detached from the automatic transmission, that it was essentially a brand new CB750 motor which would be very handy indeed.  But apparently this is not exactly the case ?

Correct, that is not the case.

Perhaps speak with an auction house?

Hi
no...not listed yet.  Summer and the nice weather got in the way.   I do plan to see him in August and take a batch of photos and get him to agree on an asking price.  Probably post it for sale in Sept.  I assume that whoever buys it will need it shipped so I have to make sure I've got the time to make up a solid shipping crate and won't have that free time until Sept/Oct.

if you need to contact me or have anything to add, it would be very appreciated.  Best to contact me at my business:  The Twelfth Fret Guitar shop.  Just google it and click the contact icon...I see all the emails when they come in

I saw it the last time I visited the fellow’s collection and will probably see him at our regular CVMG meeting tomorrow night. Want me to ask him? The real issue will be he has no interest (or need) to deal with packing/shipping it. He has a spectacular collection of +75 stunningly restored motorcycles (mostly BMW a and NSU) and this is just a crumb, sitting in a corner……
