No wiring harness amongst other things - where to start?
« on: February 07, 2022, 06:10:11 PM »
Hi all

I have in my garage a 81 CB650 that came missing a wiring harness amongst other things..

I've just refinished building the carbs, fixing the hack chop job on the rear and some other mechanical items and so now I'm moving onto the wiring and I'm now wondering just what I got my naive self into...

I have an M-Unit Blue sitting here and I'm trying to ensure I have all the essentials on the bike to make this wiring happen - today (day 1 of electrical) I realized that the bike does not have a CDI anywhere that I can see and I'm guessing it should be pretty visible (no seat, frame chopped at back and now a hoop after some surgery to it so nothing left wiring wise where I suspect it would have been.

I'm wondering if I am missing anything else (critical) to get this wiring going

So far I have

Ignition
Starter Solenoid + Fuse
Coils

Missing
CDI - I see Ricks motorsport offers one for 130, do I need 2 of these? Thats going to hurt
Connector set - is this even something I can get so I can connect up to the existing plastic connectors or should I just cut and replace?

Would appreciate any help / pointers so I can get this side of things moving

Thank you

Yes, you need two coils, but only 1 CDI.

The 650 uses a “pulse generator” as the ignition, right side of motor, behind the round dish in front of your feet.

These links are for information purposes, you can order stock parts domestically.

Blending an mUnit into the stock harness is a pain in the butt, especially if electrical is not your forte. You can “cut and replace” the connectors because you’ll be modifying the harness quite a bit.

Well first off

Thank you - I appreciate the response and help I really do

Pulse generator is present and correct.

Good news on only needing the one CDI then :) I will get one ordered

I've got no issues cutting wires and replacing connectors - used to own a sailboat back in the day and spent a lot of time re-doing original electrical wiring, just want to make sure I wire it up correctly.

I will order a CDI and a pack of waterproof connectors from amazon.

Its been a pain in the butt since purchase but its starting to take shape in the garage and thats a pretty great thing to see.

Ok I now have 2 CDI units and I am looking at the attached wiring diagram from a 750 build

I am particularly interested in the CDI wiring

Just want to make sure this looks good to people here with the knowledge on the M-Unit wiring with CDI's involved.

Thank you
