Well done Jim and Gurp, good that things are working out. I've just come in from another day's work on the "Hindenburg". The only damage to the main harness was this little piece that powers up the fuel pump and gauge. Paul couldn't supply one so I had to do the best I could with what I had.

K100 Saturday 27 April 2024 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I reinstalled the air box, mass air flow meter, connected it up and called it good after doing the "cut and shut" yesterday grafting the new (to me) injector harness to the MAF cable from my scorched harness. Talking about scorched, I had a few items to replace. The speedo/tach housing was well scorched, but Paul had a good-ish one on the shelf, so I spent an hour or so swapping the guts out of one, into the other.

K100 Saturday 27 April 2024 2 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

The knob for the trip meter was scorched too, but Paul didn't have one, so I used a silicon plug to plug the hole and keep the moisture out until I can get a new one.

K100 Saturday 27 April 2024 3 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

The pile of scorched items was piling up.

K100 Saturday 27 April 2024 4 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

So I spent the rest of the day removing everything and replacing them. The windscreen (which you look over, not through) was scorched and discoloured, so I just painted it black. Not fantastic, but will do for the time being.

K100 Saturday 27 April 2024 7 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

The left switch block was melted, but the PO had bought another one.

K100 Saturday 27 April 2024 5 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

Sadly the connector blocks were different, so I'll take it to the BMW Wreckers and see if they have the correct one, if not, I'll see if I can make one out of the two.

K100 Saturday 27 April 2024 6 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

Anyway, it's looking a bit better after removing the scorched panels and fitting the better ones.

K100 Saturday 27 April 2024 8 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

Tomorrow, I'm going for a ride. Probably not on the BMW, but I don't care, as much as I like tinkering on bikes, I need to get the rubber on the road and do some miles. Plenty of time to get the Hindenburg fixed, and importantly, not catching fire again. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Terry, your Hot machine has had a scorchy 'trial of fire' at some point  :D and it will be interesting to see just how many parts it will take before it fires-up and rides safely.
I hope you get it running for tomorrow, possibly;but considering what that poor bike has been through,it may take a bit more.

Which one of those switch plugs fits the bike's harness:the small black one,or the large-pin white one on the right ?

Good work Terry, it seems that the grafting never ends, doesn't it?

My daughter had a Chevy Impala with the sideways V-6 that had caught on fire. She pulled in our driveway and it was just starting to burn. She jumped out, popped the hood, and sprayed it down for the save. It is amazing what melts under there. Found the same car at the local Pick-a-Part and cannibalized as much as I could. Snagged the entire fuel rail with injectors, cut the wires as long as I could, plus many other plastic goodies I could grab. Then the " oh crap, that burnt too" game started.  But I got it back on the road for just a couple hundred bucks. Insurance would have totaled it. Yup there is a special satisfaction when you get a bar- b qued vehicle back on the road.

You'll get it, you always do!

Thanks guys. Bill, my ‘84 K100RS has the fat white plug. They both have the same number of wires, but there’s a couple with different colour coding so I’d be guessing if I had to “cut and shut” the harness. No biggie if I have to, but if Paul has a nice one that I can grab I’ll just do that. I also discovered that the non-OEM ignition switch is faulty. It switches the power on, but won’t switch it back off. I’m tempted to leave it in place but wire in a hidden toggle switch to confuse the fcuk out of would be thieves. D

Torch would be a name for your new BMW K but a torch to you is what we yanks call a flashlight. I was thinking of the medieval and later torches... It would be fitting for a bike that had a fire...people wouldn't connect the nickname unless you enlighten them...

Thanks guys, it’s the Hindenburg, (“Oh the humanity….”) torch would be fine too. I saw an inflatable spray booth on Vevor for not much, so might buy it and give the bike a respray. Black I think, and it might also be the candidate for the Luftmeister/RB Racing turbo kit. I better hurry up and get it running and make sure the engine is good before going to that expense though. ;D

Yep, gonna drop the pan and clean out any goop. Should be ok though, was running up until the fire, a few weeks ago, as opposed to my other one that sat for 10 years. ;D

The "Hindenburg", my slightly scorched BMW K100RS that I bought last week is coming along nicely. It had a fire caused by a split fuel hose that scorched several panels, the speedo/tach cluster outer cover, the Corbin seat, and of course lots of wiring. The left switch block was melted beyond repair, but the PO had bought, but not installed a replacement. Trouble is, the block was from a later model with a different plug on it, so I bought a replacement from the wreckers.

K100 Saturday 27 April 2024 5 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

The replacement wasn't as nice as the one he'd bought, but the wiring was different, so I bought it anyway, and hoped I could clean it up.

K100RS Wednesday 1 May 2024 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

A bit of a clean up, and some "Detail doctor" and it came up nicely.

K100RS Wednesday 1 May 2024 1 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

The seat was a bit scorched. It's a Corbin, so really comfy, but I couldn't leave it like this:

K100RS Thursday 25 April 2024 6 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I took it to an upholsterer who was able to replace the front section for a (fcuking expensive) price, but it looks better than a standard seat, which would cost me around what the repair cost.

K100RS Wednesday 1 May 2024 2 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I've replaced lots of parts, and done some wiring for the fuel pump as the wiring for the fuel pump, part of the main harness, was melted beyond repair. I wired the fuel pump to a separate switch, which allows me to turn the fuel pump on without the ignition. This worked well when I first got it working, I turned the pump on, and discovered that one of the new injectors wasn't sealed properly to the fuel rail, and fuel sprayed everywhere. Luckily the ignition wasn't on, or I might have had another fire. Today I pulled the rail, reinstalled the injectors, and this time no leaks, woohoo!

Sadly though, when I eventually summoned up the courage to start the engine, it ran like a dog. Fcuk. As I'd never had it running before, I went thru the usual things, pulled the spark plugs and checked for spark, which they all had, and even with insulated pliers holding the metal BMW caps, I managed to zap myself a couple of times. After fcuking around for ages and scratching my head, I pulled the new Ebay injectors and reinstalled the slightly scorched injectors, and tried again. The bike fired right up, and ran like a BMW should.

I took it for a lap around the block, and it ran like a dream. Everything works again, but I think I blew a fuse to the fuel pump, I'll check that tomorrow. Regardless, I'll be riding something tomorrow, fixing bikes is fun, but riding is better. ;D

Terry, that sucks about the eBay injectors, glad you got Hindy back into s running state, bet that feels great! Wonder what caused the Fuel pump fuse to fry itself, carry a few extra fuses on that ride, just check the wires for heat to see if you get a clue where the draw is... Just no molten plastic giving your fingerprints a new feature.

I sliced across my index finger doing something in the car or bike after getting the new phone and it affected my fingerprint recognition unlocking my phone for a few weeks as it healed...it was annoying.

Be safe and have fun

Thanks guys. You may have seen my post in the pissed off thread about the blocked pickup on the other BMW, which may have done some damage. I bought a pump rebuild kit and disassembled the pump last night, it definitely needed rebuilding.

It’s also the water pump, and I was happy to see that the impeller was like new, I’ve seen some really bad ones on various Youtube videos. There’s a mechanical seal/bearing behind the impeller which has a metal case and is pressed into the pump and was an absolute pig to remove, but I managed to pull it out, in pieces without damaging the pump housing.

I’m pretty happy with that, good used pumps are going for silly money, so I’m glad I didn’t have to buy one. I’ll put it all back together today and fill it with fresh oil, a new filter and fresh coolant, and listen for expensive noises when I start it up.

On another front, the new(to me) Ford ute that I bought 3 months ago is finally fixed, so I’m going to jump on the train on Saturday and collect it from mu Mum’s place and drive it home on Sunday. As much as I love the little Mitsubishi truck, the new Ford will be a lot more comfortable for longer trips. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

As much as I love the little Mitsubishi truck, the new Ford will be a lot more comfortable for longer trips. ;D

Did your Mom have it for her use Terry?
Do you have any more pics ?
