Steel dragon breadbox intake

What are y’all take on the breadbox vs pods?

The breadbox has internal velocity stacks.

Change from pods to the breadbox was a noticeable improvement on my '77 550 K3.  My experience was all the popping and gurgling on deceleration went away as soon as I switched.  Also, smoother acceleration through the RPM range, where previously it would sputter quite a bit at lower RPM.  Others in the forum can no doubt give you the technical reasons why this may be, but my practical experience is generally a much smoother throttle response.  I would definitely not go back to pods.  FYI: Steel Dragon: Good guys - good communication.

No doubt good guys. I have the corners taped off so only air comes from the top and bottom, help with crosswinds.

Can you get your box on without taking the carbs off? I have a 76 cb550.

Can you get your box on without taking the carbs off? I have a 76 cb550.

I can get it on/off without removing the carbs, but it's pretty tight.  Nothing will be as easy as popping pods on and off.  Getting to the allen bolts can be tedious.  I highly recommend a long "T" handled allen wrench to navigate into the tight spots.  One negative issue: I found the breadbox forces a slight reroute of the clutch cable.  On the '77 that means it drops between carb 3 and 4 and INSIDE the rail that runs across all four.  It's just enough change of angle to bother me.  It seems like it causes unnecessary friction, but I have no solid proof of this.  I haven't found a more direct way to route it.  Curious if anyone else had this issue.

Thx bro. I found that loosening the carb bodies then push them down until the box can slide on was pretty painless. Those lil azz Allen’s are pure hell especially 2/3

My clutch cable resides in the same spot 😆

Life long buddy ran one on a 75k.
He had the two outside edges covered with strips of aluminum soda cans turned inside out under the chrome perforated metal…His bread box had the desirable velocity stacks but they were considerably shorter than OEM. Ran 125 mains and 42 pilots, plenty fat, but ran good with a big old RC sidewinder… Turned left pretty good. At night turning right could sometimes result in a shower of sparks. 😜

I've been watching for a breadbox style for my Hot Rod, it has velocity stacks now. My carbs are the 29 smoothbores with Kawasaki spacing so I need one for a KZ. You would think that would be easy.
