You want how much?
« on: May 03, 2022, 06:37:16 PM »
I've always had a problem with paying big bucks for a job I can do myself. As I'm getting older though and have a few more bucks I find I pay for things that I wouldn't before. I have a tough time paying big bucks for what is considered unskilled labour.

Someone came by my door to offer to externally clean my windows for $80 on my house. I asked him how long will it take. He said 20 minutes. I quickly did the math and  I realized he's charging $240 an hour to clean windows with a long squeegee - no ladder. I called a company that professionally cleans your BBQ. They quoted me $249 plus tax. Two hours of work. What?

What is happening? Both these jobs require almost no training and responsibility. Jobs that anyone can do are being quoted as trades?? Come on!

Is it the same where you live?

With less and less job LS requiring physical labor and any(often little) skill. The job market in my area and many like it are flooded with factory work needing people to do just work but I able to find/keep people. They think their minimal skill and less than minimal efforts are worth skilled trade wages.
I have a few freinds that own small construction companies doing work ranging from full builds to roofing and decks. The market for hirable/trainable people for them seems even less.
I actually just got done talking to my GF about a local Tire shop closing after 30 years of operation.
It's a changing landscape for that kinda labor. Cheap unskilled labor is quickly becoming a thing of the past.
While I'm skilled labor Industrial maintenance (multi craft)  the wage gap that makes my job worth the extra responsibility and work is quickly disappearing.

Anyone recall the Good/Fast/Cheap venn diagram?

Would be nice to be able to bill $120/hr to do what I enjoy.

There is a labor shortage of skilled workers, the young generation does not want to do manual labor, they prefer to have their iphone in hand and do whatever with it! I've had many contractors tell me they cannot find qualified help.

I do as much as possible myself, with help from the wifey.

I've been the same way for a long time. I learned quite some time ago that if I want it done right I'll do it myself. I even mount my own automotive tires after the last time I had a shop do it the wrench monkey torqued the lugs so tight it actually distorted one of the rims causing a vibration on the way home from the shop that did not exist before having the tires replaced. Fortunately, they were steel rims and after loosening the lugs (which required a pipe extension on my 1/2" breaker bar) then torquing to spec the vibration went away. I thought I was going to break a stud getting the lugs loose. That was over 20 years ago...  >:(

Thats not to mention the deportation of previously exploited laborers.

The youth of today are able to write the app the engineer uses to monitor all the installations.  Then moonlight as a programmer for the robot that will replace the menial task labor force.

Though there are some talented teenage welders at my college.  A plasma arc of hope on the horizon.

Bomber ole buddy I think you give too much credit to the younger generation as a whole. Yes some real standouts as with any generation. But really the irony of the age of information is the widespread and willingness to be purely ignorant.
The new hires I see at my work make my lose faith in future generations. I only hope my children do not grow up like them. Worthless for menial work. Lazy and entitled.
Manual labor will never be outdated but the work ethic to do it is quickly becoming arcane.

Totally agree about the information age.  There are some stupid trends orbiting that sphere.

Lazy may not be the right word.  It gets abused by people who just haven't figured out what really motivates someone who has a different way than they do.
Discipline may be the better adverb.
A monk may seem lazy compared to a world-class athlete.
Yet both are highly disciplined in their respective studies.

One day, we'll get to see what really motivates the youth of our world.  What that is could be a real surprise.

What motivates almost all youth is responsibility. It makes them feel like they belong and are grown up. Otherwise it's a slippery slope downhill.

AC tech are needed so badly in Austin, TX that a local company is advertising on the radio that you can be given up to $7500 by them for a referral if they hire the tech.  Wish I knew one that needed a job!

Must not be a union shop 🤔

Sometimes i think I should've taken my buddy up on his apprenticeship offer doing hvac installs.
His journeyman salary and benefits are triple what I could hope to make just spinning wrenches.
Sure has me considering the i.a.m.a.w. should i achieve some proficiency in tig welding and machining.

Is it too late?   It's a tough job but the compensation is endless, at least down here in the hot south.

Probably not too late.  I've just been on a different trajectory.  My welding shop instructor thinks I'd do well to keep that torch lit.

I can't decide if this video post belongs here or in the pissed off thread.

When a loose knit teenage drama club can clear 60k in 3 months - seems most of our previous assumptions were moot.
They're not lazy or mooching or even living at their parents.
They're getting bigger paydays from marketing firms than most working stiffs will see in a year.

I just hope this is a minority outlier.
