Chrome How To? In Tips and Tricks Section- Update
« on: April 19, 2022, 01:03:19 PM »
Want to do some chrome clean up so was digging around FAQs and Tips & Tricks. Found “Chrome How To” by Jeff Kushner and wanted to try his method, using a product called “The Works- Tub and Shower Cleaner.” That post was written in about 2016 and I learned the manufacturer of The Works changed the formula in about 2017, reducing the main ingredient from about 20% to just under 10%.

Has anyone used the reduced concentration formula with any success?

Thanks

Couple days ago got my hands on 4, 32oz. Bottles of The Works, Tub and Tile Cleaner. From my earlier post I was wondering if the newer, less concentrated ingredients would do the trick removing rust from chromed parts and other things, like nickel plated fasteners. So over the weekend I soaked a dozen or so parts for about 4 hours in the solution. Conclusion…..

The Works, works!

Parts were pitted chrome that also had surface rust. All the rust was gone. Of course, it can’t help the raised edges of the pits, but frankly, the chrome shines. And all you have to do is dump it bath of the product and give it time to work.

I’m giving it a thumbs up recommendation.

Just stick to steel with that stuff and no aluminum or things will get nasty. Wouldn't do any alloys either just in case.

The bottle specifically says not to use on chrome, but given the recommendation in this forum I tried it. Initially, it seems not to affect the chrome. Maybe in a week or two it will fall off, but I doubt it. Should it start to show issues, I’ll update this thread.

Work case scenario it might need a rinse of baking soda & water to neutralize any residual acid that could be hiding in the nooks and crannies.
